This matrixed position manages a team of Enterprise Business Leaders (EBLs) and Product Managers assigned to each major FMI diagnostic product line to create and grow an overall diagnostic product portfolio strategy for Commercial and Biopharma Business Units.
This leadership-level role works to leverage product strategy in informing the overall corporate strategy through development and management of product roadmaps and global marketing strategies.
The role works cross-functionally across the organization, including Research & Development, Portfolio & Program Management, Clinical Development, BioPharma Marketing, Operations, Technology, Marketing and Sales, in implementing and achieving adopted strategies, vision, and goals for optimizing the portfolio.
Reporting into the Chief Commercial Officer, the Vice President, Product Strategy will be responsible for developing and executing a global product portfolio strategy across all diagnostic product lines and services.
The ideal candidate will be both a strategic and operational leader with a track record of success in driving results through influence and leveraging indirect resources.
This senior leader will have strong analytical and portfolio management skills and will be a highly collaborative and visionary leader with deep diagnostic, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and / or related industry experience.
This senior leader will make significant contributions to the long-range vision, strategy and plans for Foundation Medicine.
Key Responsibilities
• Hire, develop, and motivate a high-performance team. Build an effective organizational structure, processes, and a collaborative culture that emphasizes the achievement of both short- and long-term business objectives with measurable impact on customers including providers, payers and patients.
• Provide inspirational and strategic leadership to a team of Enterprise Business Leaders who define product vision, and oversee product success from development through commercialization through developing long-term (5 year), mid-term (3 year) and short term (3-12 month) strategic marketing goals.
• Create and drive a combined Commercial and Biopharma product vision and collaborate with key internal stakeholders across multiple FMI departments (Medical, R&D, BioPharma, Corporate Management, Technology and Operations) to ensure strategic co-development, prioritization and positioning of data, assay, and medical solutions within the portfolio.
Serve as FMI owner of the product roadmap.
• Drive cross-portfolio product strategies, identifying efficiencies and opportunities across Enterprise Business Teams, ensuring cohesive and integrated plans at the portfolio level, and developing a portfolio approach to understanding the patient journey, and the competitive and regulatory landscape.
• Ensure Enterprise Business Teams produce timely, high quality product plans, commercial assessment insights, strategic options and recommendations to the Senior Leadership & Executive Teams regarding products and their market potential to enable cross-portfolio decision making.
• Serve as a member of the Commercial Leadership Team (CLT) to lead and participate in strategy development, decision making, and creating a great place to work in Commercial.
• Represent Commercial on FMI’s Innovation Committee to ensure pipeline and portfolio investments reflect the needs of the commercial market globally and across short, medium and long-term horizons.
• Represent Commercial on FMI’s Portfolio Delivery Committee (PDC) to optimize resource investment, making trade-off decisions across diagnostic products as appropriate.
• Mobilize the organization in the development and implementation of the global diagnostic portfolio strategy.
• Rapidly resolve critical issues that impact delivery.
• Execute efforts to ensure strong customer and external relationships to inform portfolio recommendations and to allow the business to thrive.
• Travel domestically and internationally up to 40% of the time.
• Other projects as periodically assigned.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
• Bachelor’s Degree in Scientific, Marketing or Business Concentration, OR equivalent work experience.
• 15+ years of multidisciplinary work experience in the diagnostic, pharmaceutical and / or biotechnology industries, of which 5+ years include leading and managing teams.
• 2+ years of full clinical product lifecycle management experience spanning inception to post-launch phases, including product launches.
Preferred Qualifications
• Advanced Degree, such as an MBA, MD, JD or PhD
• 7+ years of experience leading and managing teams
• Multi-year experience working in oncology
• Prior experience developing and overseeing the execution of breakthrough commercial strategies that have led to considerable financial results and increased the long-term, sustainable success of multiple products
• Experience with launch planning and management, leading global project teams, and lifecycle planning and management
• History of creating robust and innovative business strategies within the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or diagnostic industries
• Proven track record in inspiring, coaching and developing direct reports
• Proven track record in consistently meeting or exceeding financial and / or other quantitative targets, as well as qualitative goals for large departments and teams in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and / or related life science industries
• In-depth knowledge of the global diagnostic / genomic testing business and the biotech / pharmaceutical industry, especially with regard to product development, regulatory issues, commercialization, reimbursement initiatives, industry trends
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills, able to properly interact with people in different levels / positions / experience and cultures, both internally and externally
• Exceptional collaboration skills in a highly matrixed and global environment
• Strong change management skills and a proven track record of effectively driving organizational change and innovation
• Demonstration of an enterprise perspective beyond the specific product
• Exceptional strategic orientation and agility
• Ability to lead through ambiguity and a dynamic environment, pivoting as needed and simplifying in the midst of complexity
• Understanding of HIPAA and importance of privacy of patient data
