POSITION SUMMARY:
The Senior Design Engineer is a senior-level role on the Construction Engineering team. After a Site Survey is complete, the Design Engineer is responsible for creating a buildable solar design that meets all municipality, utility, and financing requirements while ensuring Sales preferences are considered. This is a crucial role within the project lifecycle, and requires an acute eye for detail spanning Design, Electrical, and Structural disciplines, and includes Ground Mount, EV Charging, and Battery projects in addition to Solar-Only.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Produce a rooftop or ground-mount photovoltaic layout using Aurora, BrightPath, and/or Everbright while taking into consideration external requirements and preference
Identify any factors that may affect the scope of work including project cost, installation complexity and feasibility
Create and maintain Construction plans using AutoCAD and internal design tools that are compliant with Municipality and Utility requirements
Versatile to the extent that any project in any region of the country can be handled without supervision of work
Strong understanding of code to be able to be utilized by Electrical Application Engineering Team, when called upon, to work through pilot projects.
Determine the optimal point of interconnection based on existing electrical infrastructure and conditions, with an eye for ease of installation
Complete electrical load calculations to determine the feasibility of various electrical scopes of work
Manage a regional pipeline of Construction Engineering tasks, including new projects, revisions to existing projects, and tickets
Work closely with Regional Branches to establish rapport and a direct line of communication between Engineering and Field Operations
Complete all job duties for projects including EV Chargers and Ground Mounts
Complete all job duties for projects including Batteries and Shade Structures, and light Commercial buildings
Participate in new product pilots to establish Engineering best practices and create SOPs
Perform other duties as assigned
What Success Looks Like in This Role
All assigned designs, rework and tickets completed within 24 hours
Achieve 95% quality within a rolling 30-day period
Zero waived large scope adders, including MPU, Trench, and Re-roof
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Certifications:
Bachelor's degree in engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical) or similar degree
Experience:
Minimum of 3 years of professional design experience in the solar industry
Experience with AutoCAD (or equivalent)
Previous experience managing projects from initial design to installation, preferred
Experience with permitting processes with local authorities having jurisdiction, preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Ability to design with multiple types and configurations of Batteries
Ability to design Roof-Mount and Ground-Mount photovoltaic systems, including an understanding of the property & topographic considerations required for installation
Understanding of relevant Electrical concepts to Solar, including tie-in methods, red flags, and relevant chapters in the NEC
Competency in basic Structural concepts including residential roof framing types and components
Familiarity of various roof attachment and racking assemblies, including factors influencing and limiting product choice
Strong communication skills, including the ability to concisely describe problems, solutions, and needs
Must be a team player, focused on achieving team and Company goals ahead of their own
Must work well unsupervised and be self-motivated
Special Skills & Training:
Previous Solar experience preferred
