General Responsibilities
The Gallery Manager and Curator is responsible for exhibitions and related events in The Rouse Company Foundation Gallery and Richard B. Talkin Family Art Gallery as well as the college’s online galleries. Aligned with the mission and vision of the college, the gallery season is programmed with a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion; innovative artistic work; and community engagement. Under the supervision of the Horowitz Center Director, the gallery manager and curator works closely with the chair of Visual Arts to develop a season of exhibits and exhibition opportunities that is engaging for HCC students and the community.

Work Performed
Curation:
  • Curate 4 to 6 annual exhibitions, selecting artists through invitation and open calls. While building a season featuring a range of media and diverse artists, special consideration will be given to artists who are open to working with students via a master class, artist talk, or the like.
  • Collaborate with the Visual Arts department for the Invitational Student Exhibitions and Portfolio Exhibitions.
  • Assist Foundations Portfolio class with selection and preparation of artwork. This may include guidance on matting, framing, and/or other presentation options.
  • Advise Studio Art course students and faculty on proper exhibition preparation and framing for Student Invitational Exhibition artwork. Support faculty to ensure the gallery’s expectations are met.
  • Collaborate with community partners and the public school system to present exhibitions in HCC galleries.
  • Oversee the exhibition, lecture, and workshop for the Visiting Artist Series in collaboration with the Visual Arts Department.
Exhibitions:
  • Negotiate terms of artist contracts. Coordinate with Business Manager to process contracts.
  • Facilitate exhibition consultation, design, mock-ups
  • Draft exhibition checklists and timelines.
  • Manage receipt and delivery (or Pick-up and return) of artwork
  • Ensure walls, equipment, and supplies are prepped and ready for installation
  • Responsible for performing or facilitating installation, deinstallation, and lighting
  • Oversee freelance installers and other vendors in the galleries
  • Inspect and Document condition of work upon arrival and departure. Maintain condition reports
  • Coordinate design and delivery of vinyl lettering, labels, wall text, and exhibition catalogs.
  • Communicate with administration to ensure insurance coverage of artwork
  • Collaborate with Audience Services to develop artwork sales procedures and update sale items throughout the year
  • Participate as member of the campus-wide collections committee and ARTsites selection committee.
  • Attend Directors Meetings.
Event Planning:
  • Review each season with faculty. Seek opportunities to develop programming and curricula that foster a connection between the artist/artwork and students.
  • Schedule receptions, gallery talks, artist lectures, and short artist workshops.
  • Collaborate with Audience Services to manage receptions.
Facility Management:
  • Develop and maintain gallery policies and procedures manual.
  • Responsible for overseeing The Rouse Company Foundation Gallery and Richard B. Talkin Family Art Gallery spaces in collaboration with Howard Community College Facilities.
  • Ensure that each exhibition aligns with HCC and Howard County safety and sustainability standards.
  • Coordinate with Associate Technical Director and Facilities to discuss power-heavy installations.
  • Obtain and maintain HCFD Crowd Manager certification.
  • Maintain the exhibition spaces and report maintenance concerns to Facilities. Place work orders for lighting, clean-up, and facility needs with special attention and awareness of health and safety concerns.
  • Maintain inventory of gallery equipment and supplies. Make purchases as needed within the limits of the budget.
Public Relations and Promotion:
  • Develop relationships with local and regional galleries, studios, and artists
  • Collaborate with Horowitz Center and HCC PRM office to develop marketing plans. Provide copy and images to be utilized in press releases, on the college website, on community calendars and other promotional materials as well as exhibition catalogs.
  • Collaborate with Audience Services to maintain patron mailing list.
  • Act as content contributor to Horowitz Center social media accounts.
  • Coordinate uploads for online exhibitions in collaboration with HCC Web Services.
  • Document exhibitions for archives and social media. This includes coordination with photographer and other vendors.

  • BFA or BA with a concentration in studio art, curatorial studies, museum studies, or related field
  • Must have a strong knowledge of diverse studio art practices
  • Gallery, preparatory, handling, and installation experience a must


Working Conditions
  • Aspects of the job require physical labor including climbing, lifting, and the use of power tools.
  • Includes exposure to loud noise, high voltage electricity, and hot equipment.
  • Lifting up to 70 pounds

  • May have to work under stressful situations and deadlines
  • Exposure to various weather conditions during load-in/load-out for indoor/outdoor facilities.
