We are seeking a Mechanical Designer to join our team supporting the Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) at their Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory! This position is full-time and will be based out of West Mifflin, PA with up to 20% remote work.
Responsibilities
Support the Naval Nuclear Laboratory in developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology for the safety and reliability of our Navy’s submarine and aircraft carrier fleet.
Join team as part of the Propulsion Plant Team Trainer (PPTT) project, which is a multi-site organization engaged in the design, production, testing, and delivery of advanced training simulators.
Collaborate with engineers to create or modify designs (SolidWorks) and drawings (eDrawings, PDF, etc.) for PPTT equipment.
Provide input related to designs' manufacturability, cost-effectiveness, and compliance with industry standards and regulations.
Provide input to the material selection for components based on performance requirements, durability and cost-effectiveness.
Requirements
Education & Years of Experience – Associate's Degree in mechanical design, drafting, or a related field and 5+ years of relevant experience.
Citizenship – To be considered, you must be a United States (U.S.) citizen due to the federal nature of the work.
Clearance – To be considered, you must be able to obtain and maintain a government issued clearance, if needed. Having an "L" or "Q" ("Secret" or "Top Secret" as well) clearance prior is preferred as work cannot start until cleared.
Proficiency creating and modifying mechanical designs in SolidWorks.
Proficiency creating and modifying drawings based on detailed engineering input.
Knowledge of drafting standards and techniques, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), tolerance stack analysis, and design for value engineering.
Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
Desired Skills
Experience in electrical design and drafting.
Familiarity with manufacturing processes and techniques.
Familiarity with common plastic and metal additive manufacturing technologies.
Familiarity with common sheet metal forming techniques and how tolerances impact manufacturing cost for each.
Familiarity with common machine tool sand machining practices and how tolerances impact manufacturing cost for each.

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is comprised of the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, located in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory located in Niskayuna, New York, the Kesselring Site, located in West Milton, New York, and the Naval Reactor Facility located in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
