Requirements

The O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law was established in 2007 through the generous philanthropy of Linda and Timothy O’Neill to respond to the need for innovative solutions to the most pressing global health concerns. In bringing together experts from both the public health and legal fields, the O’Neill Institute reflects the importance of public and private law in health policy analysis. Housed at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., the O’Neill Institute draws upon Georgetown’s considerable intellectual resources, including the School of Nursing and Health Studies, the School of Medicine, the McCourt School of Public Policy, and the Kennedy Institute of Ethics.

The National and Global Health Law Director of Academic Programs will provide leadership, daily operational responsibility and control for the Law Center’s graduate programs in national and global health law LL.M. program as well as our J.D. program in health law. We seek a dynamic, entrepreneurial, visionary leader who is a self-starter. Candidates must be exemplary communicators, lead with integrity, demonstrate good judgment and discernment, and possess strong emotional and cross-cultural intelligence. Responsibilities include raising awareness of the JD and graduate programs in health law among prospective applications and employers, recruitment and retention of a diverse and talented group of LL.M. students, cultivating relationships with alumni of the programs, curriculum development and evaluation, recruitment of adjunct faculty to offer specialized courses across the health law curriculum, evaluation of applications for admission to the program, career and academic counseling for students, and development of internship and externship placement opportunities.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Strategic planning to expand the reach and impact of our academic and capacity-building programs, including JD and LLM offerings, while ensuring continuous innovation in content and delivery. As a thought leader, you will drive the development of new programs such as certificate programs.

  • Outreach and collaboration with US and international partners including academic institutions, national and international organizations, governments, civil society, private sector organizations, law firms, and our alumni network. Outreach activities, including presentations at conferences and academic institutions, strategic communications, and one-on-one engagement with prospective students, interns, and fellows, build the profile of our programs and support recruitment and job placement.

  • Recruitment, admissions and candidate selection, including travel to build new relationships, reviewing application materials, conducting interviews, and determining funding and scholarship awards.

  • Curriculum development and extra-curricular programming, including identifying opportunities for innovative health law course offerings, identifying and recruiting adjunct faculty members, and delivering professional development and social extra-curricular programing.

  • Academic and career advising, including providing guidance on course selections, ensuring compliance with degree and certificate requirements, reviewing resumes and cover letters, and

  • identifying internship and employment opportunities.

  • In addition to directing the L.L.M programs, the Director of Academic Programs may also engage in teaching and/or research projects for the O’Neill Institute. 

Work Interactions

The Director of Academic Programs works closely with the Faculty Director, the Executive Director of the O’Neill Institute, the O’Neill Institute’s core leadership team, and the Assistant Dean of Graduate Programs at Georgetown Law. The Director of Academic Programs will provide leadership, daily operational responsibility and control of Georgetown Law’s J.D. health law and graduate health law programs, and the O’Neill Institute’s Capacity Building initiative.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Possess a J.D. degree, or another appropriate graduate degree

  • Seven to ten years relevant job experience in health policy and law and/or related fields such as international trade law and human rights law

  • Knowledge of and passion in academic program management and/or capacity building programs

  • Exemplary  oral and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills

  • Commitment to working with a diverse student body and faculty

  • Team approach to problem solving

  • Emotional and cross-cultural intelligence

  • Specialized training in public or global health, such as an M.P.H or L.L.M preferred

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$80,429.00 - $157,238.93

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
