Position Summary: 

The Community Safety Shift Lead provides leadership for the department by way of modeling GLIDE’s values and approach to community service and safety for the staff. In this role, you will direct department staff to perform a variety of duties that support the department’s daily operations to provide safety and support to GLIDE’s programs, facilities, and special events. The Shift Lead delegates assignments, provides coaching and demonstrates for staff how to safely, respectfully, and effectively engage a diverse community struggling with varying conditions and needs, while building ongoing positive relationships with GLIDE’s internal and external community.  

 

The position will, at times, require long days and/or evenings, weekends, and holidays. Reliable, consistent, and excellent attendance is required with schedule flexibility determined by agency needs.  


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and manage work schedules (e.g. meal position charts, roving position charts, duty checklists, etc.). 
  • Ensure CST monitors take lunches and breaks when scheduled ensuring compliance for the organization 
  • Set-up, lead, and close-down each Free Meals Program meal shift period, including assigning staff to, and ensuring completion of, post assignments. 
  • Manage daily activities directly related to providing safety support and security services for buildings located at 330 Ellis St., 434 Ellis St., and special events. 
  • Assist with special events, including set up, staffing, break down, and clean up 
  • Respond to conflict, alarms, disturbances, emergencies, and disasters. Call police/fire departments in cases of emergencies. Supervise staff on scene during incidents and ensure proper safety protocols are adhered to. 
  • Investigate and document incidents involving clients, staff, and other emergencies that require Management and/or Withdrawal from Care Committee review. 
  • Attend Return to Care weekly meetings as assigned by Asst. Manager and/or Manager 
  • Compile and complete incident reports and turn into Manager and Assistant Manager in a timely manner 
  • Document and communicate daily and weekly important occurrences and observations that impact staff morale, departmental operations, and safety operations with Management. 
  • Keep staff on shift apprised of critical information that impacts staff’s ability to make decisions about their roles, duties, and client access through consistent and clear communication. 
  • Model and coach staff on professional conduct to support ongoing staff development and to maintain departmental integrity. 
  • Participate in regular training and development opportunities (e.g., CPI, CPR/First Aid, etc.) to increase capacity to apply acceptable, compassionate, and creative approaches to daily work and client engagement. 
  • Model and coach staff on conflict management, de-escalation, and inclusive and compassionate approach to client service and engagement to maintain community trust. 
  • Keep apprised of current GLIDE program service offerings and schedules and community resources to coach and support staff on providing accurate information to community seeking help and support. 
  • Inform Management of personnel issues that may impact the morale, professionalism, and abilities of the staff to achieve the Department and Agency’s mission and goals as a collective unit.  
  • Work cooperatively with other department’s management and staff to problem solve. Provide Safety expertise and professional assessment of further interventions. Shift Leads must be able to collaborate departmentally and inter-departmentally on project-based assignments.   


Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school graduate or GED equivalent and 2+ years’ experience leading staff/volunteers in a community-based organization agency setting or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred. 
  • Must have or complete CPR and First Aid Training within 3 months of hire. 
  • Must have or complete Crisis Prevention Certification within 3 months of hire. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills are essential and knowledge of de-escalation techniques. 
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective safety and security operations for the protection of people and property. 
  • Must be able to administer CPR/First Aid. 
  • Continue to assist with area safety during medical crisis (e.g., crowd control, provide safe entry and exit for police/fire/medical staff). 
  • Excellent organization and planning abilities. Ability to multi-task within specific timelines. 
  • Ability to respond to high-intensity situations, de-escalate interactions and work within a complex and demanding environment in the Tenderloin neighborhood; ability to apply community-based principles to working with persons experiencing homelessness, substance use and mental health issues. 


Physical Requirements:
  • This work can be physically and mentally demanding. As a result, employees may be frequently standing 90% of the time and walking constantly throughout the shift. Physical stamina and a high energy level are essential to this role. 
  • Ability to move quickly to address emergencies.  
  • Must possess the strength, stamina and mobility to climb multiple flights of stairs, repeatedly in each shift. 
  • Ability to hear within normal range, and communicate effectively (in person, telephone or Zoom).   
  • Finger dexterity and the ability to use all standard office equipment.   


$28 - $30 an hour
This position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement.
