Job Description
The sensing and predictive analytics group in the NREL Power System Engineering Center has an opening for a Graduate Student Researcher focusing on transmission system modeling, operation and optimization. The successful candidate will work with researchers from NREL, industry and academia on an exciting SETO funded project which aims to develop and demonstrate grid optimization and control solutions to dispatch inverter-based resources (IBRs) in transmission system to provide grid services.
The main tasks include:
  • Develop utility partner’s transmission system network in PSS/E, including the IBR plant model.
  • Develop emulated EMS to mimic the operational routines at utility partner and interact with our grid operation and control solution to procure flexibilities from IBRs.
  • Develop the RSCAD model by converting PSS/E model and make modifications to make the RSCAD model match with the PSS/E model.
  • Program HELICS framework using python and integrate all the federates (simulation software, forecasting algorithm, control algorithm and emulated EMS) together.
  • Support laboratory controller hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) setup configuration (e.g., communication configuration and datapoints mapping).
Preferred intern period will be October 2023 to September 2024. If not, six months are also desirable. The starting date is negotiable, and the intern needs to be onsite. Working 40 hours per week is strongly preferred. This will be a great opportunity for the student to learn and put hands on modeling, coding, software integration and HIL testing etc.
