Job Description
We have a graduate intern researcher position(s) available in the Chemistry and Nanoscience Center to support Electrochemical Device research. As a graduate intern researcher, you'll have the opportunity to work within a diverse, dynamic, multidisciplinary team to enhance your professional skills, and support the NREL mission while also receiving advanced training from a mentor.
This position will involve a subset of the following activities: 1) testing of electrochemical devices for performance and durability, 2) the incorporation of catalysts, ionomers, and membranes into membrane electrode assemblies, 3) the characterization of these materials, 4) development and utilization of mass spectrometry and supporting systems for product analysis, and 5) work-up and reporting of data, etc. The candidate will support larger group project efforts and interaction with external partners. The collaborative environment requires a candidate who has the ability to interface with scientists of different disciplines and to learn topics outside their area of expertise. In general, candidates should have a demonstrated track record in addressing fundamental science questions and devising solutions to challenging problems.
The ideal candidate for this position should have a strong background in one (or more) of the following areas: (1) electrochemistry; (2) design or testing of electrochemical devices (3) mass spectrometry or processing and analysis of mass spectrometry datasets (4) characterization of electrocatalysts or electrochemical properties of materials.
Experience in electrolysis, fuel cell, or CO2 or N2 reduction is desirable but not required. Alternatively, experience in electrochemistry or mass spectrometry is desirable but not required.
This will be an onsite position, with availability of full time or part time.

Basic Qualifications
Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Additional Required Qualifications
  • Qualified candidates should demonstrate skill in interpreting and assessing the experimental results of their own work and have a demonstrated record of success during their graduate work.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills are essential for success in this role.
  • Teamwork and collaboration define the modern scientific approach, and the ability to work as part of a larger group is desirable. Inclusion and diversity are core values, and the graduate intern researcher will be expected to support a work environment that maximizes the unique talents and innovative ideas of every worker.
Preferred Qualifications
  • B.S. in chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science & engineering, physics, mechanical/electrical engineering, or related field.
  • Currently enrolled in a M.S. or Ph.D. degree program or less than approximately six months after graduation from a graduate degree program in one of the fields noted above.
  • Record of research experience in electrochemistry, electrochemical devices, mass spectrometry, or related field.
  • Research experience in fuel cells, electrolysis, CO2 or N2 reduction, mass spectrometry, electrochemistry, or a related field is desirable.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Graduate II / Annual Salary Range: $40,500 - $64,800
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position's work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
Benefits Summary
Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance; 403(b) Employee Savings Plan with employer match*; and sick leave (where required by law). NREL employees may be eligible for, but are not guaranteed, performance-, merit-, and achievement- based awards that include a monetary component. Some positions may be eligible for relocation expense reimbursement. Internships projected to be less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for medical, dental, or vision benefits.
