KGNS-TV (Digital 8.1), serves communities in Texas and Mexico. In Texas, KGNS reaches Laredo (market number 185), Asherton, Bruni, Carrizo Springs, Catarina, El Cenizo, Encinal, Hebbronville, Mirando City, Oilton, Rio Bravo and Zapata. In Mexico, KGNS can be seen in Nuevo Laredo, and Guerrero.
On January 7, 1956, we went on air as KHAD-TV, broadcasting NBC, CBS and ABC programming.
KGNS has been owned and operated by Gray Television since December 31, 2013. KGNS is an NBC, CW, CBS, ABC, and Telemundo affiliate.
KGNS CARES, the community arm of the station group, serves the community with numerous station sponsored events and initiatives which include the Shred for Hunger Shredder Day which began in 2015 where over 20,000 lbs. of documents were shredded. Additionally, thousands of dollars were raised for the South Texas Food Bank. Other community initiatives include 8th Grader of the Month with local school districts and the Laredo Police Department; and Friday Football Fever High School Player of the Week. KGNS also helps the Salvation Army each December collect toys for children. As well, public service initiatives are promoted across all of the station platforms through KGNS CARES.
KGNS also home to Laredo's iconic Chief Meteorologist Richard "Heatwave" Berler, C.B.M. who has been on KGNS News 8 for over 34 years; as well as Meteorologist, Teresa Velasco.
In September of 2009, Telemundo Laredo, our groups’ Spanish language powerhouse, welcomed a new member to our family Lupita Benavides, a veteran in the news industry; and a very well respected journalist. “Telenoticias", the local news product for Telemundo Laredo, launched on November 18, 2010 (M-F, at 10p). After the initial launch of Telenoticias, veteran Sports Anchor Roberto Galvez joined the Telenoticias team as Sports Director. Telenoticias airs on Telemundo Laredo, Monday-Friday at 5p & 10 p. As well, 5p and 10p newscasts are available LIVE on stream on TelemundoLaredo.tv and app platforms.
In April 2004, KGNS (NBC) became the first local television station to broadcast a digital signal.
Our channel line ups in the viewing area are: KGNS – Spectrum channel 10, Direct TV channel 8, Dish Network channel 8, as well as over the air digitally on 8.1. KGNS' NBC-HD signal is available through Spectrum Cable and Dish Network, as well as over the air. CW Laredo – Spectrum Cable channel 19, Direct TV ch. 9, Dish Network channel 15, as well as over the air digitally on 8.2. Telemundo Laredo – Spectrum Cable channel 25, Dish Network channel 16, as well as over the air digitally on 8.3.
