About the Role


The Athletic is looking to develop dynamic audio-first properties and is seeking an experienced audio producer and team leader to collaborate with our collection of audio and video producers and editors while tapping into the biggest newsroom of sports reporters in the world for reporting on current stories.


This producer will work with a team of producers, audio and video editors, reporters, and digital editors for both audio and digital media to deliver a wide range of audio properties, a portfolio that will span from instant reactions to breaking news, longform concepts to narrative podcasts, all married to video-friendly products. The right candidate will place an emphasis on working with current audio leads to expand the footprint and audience of a portfolio of successful shows and help launch new opportunities.


The position demands a deep understanding of scripted and live reaction shows and concepts, technical production tools, and will know how to oversee world-class audio scripts and deadline executions and planning.


This is a remote position based in the United States or Canada.


Responsibilities


  • Work with audio leaders and newsroom leadership to develop best in class audio executions and franchises.
  • Identify and plan both short-term audio around news and longer podcasts.
  • Coach a diverse newsroom of reporters and producers in the audio space.
  • Understand the competitive landscape to identify audio talent and suggest new ideas and opportunities based on clearly demonstrated statistical comps and potential.
  • Work with commercial leads on sponsored content executions.
  • Collaborate with news leads to identify quick-turn audio executions around breaking news.
  • Maintain ties with The Athletic audience team to create audio that lands in peak moments of fan interest around breaking news and trending topics.
  • Assure that all audio productions maintain standards of The Athletic newsroom around reporting, sourcing, and sensitive topics.
  • Direct and guide best in class technical executions of all podcasts utilizing a range of editing tools; production capabilities will identify and utilize mixing tools and outputs.


Requirements


  • At least 10 years experience in audio production and content development; some video experience preferred.
  • Experienced with a range of audio production and editing tools.
  • A familiarity with the podcast landscape and a point of view on what constitutes excellence in the audio space, often tied to video executions.
  • Experience executing broadcasts that also appeal to a video-first audience.
  • A deep understanding of podcast delivery apps and platforms.
  • Demonstrated portfolio of production on audio executions and podcasts – standard, live and narrative, is a plus.
  • Experience in sports media or a strong knowledge base in football is a plus.
  • Significant experience coaching both broadcasting and reporting talent and production teams, both producers and audio editors, is a plus.
  • Newsroom experience in a deadline-driven environment is a plus.
  • Able to work quickly and efficiently.
  • Exceptional communication skills.
  • This is a remote position based in the United States or Canada.


The annual base salary range for this role is $85,000.00 - $100,000.00 USD. The total compensation offered for this position may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location. It may also include non-cash rewards and benefits. The base salary range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
