Marketing Specialist, Central Insights Unit & EmergingTech

Department: Mobile for Development (M4D)
Department detail: Marketing
Location: London with hybrid working
Position type: Permanent

About the Team

Mobile for Development (M4D) is a dedicated global team within the GSMA, which brings together our mobile operator members, tech innovators, the development community and governments, to prove the power of mobile in underserved markets. We identify opportunities and deliver innovations with socio-economic impact that tackle the challenges of digital and financial inclusion, gender equality, climate and humanitarian action, agriculture and utility service provision.

This position sits across M4D’s Central Insights Unit (CIU) and EmergingTech (ET) programme. The CIU sits at the core of M4D and produces thought-leadership research on mobile and frontier technologies and the impact of their application in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The CIU works closely with our main funding partner – the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the rest of M4D to ensure that research highlights the role of mobile, draws on the expertise held internally, and builds capacity within FCDO across their regional offices.

The development of AI and other emerging technologies presents the opportunity to further bridge the digital divide in LMICs. The ET programme, through our research activities and market engagement functions, identifies, promotes, informs and supports opportunities for emerging technology to create sustainable and inclusive socio-economic and climate impact, along with supporting activities of the Innovation Fund and advocacy teams.

What the hiring manager says

“This role is an opportunity for the right candidate to join the GSMA M4D Marketing Team and help support and promote research and innovations in using mobile technology to improve the lives of those in emerging markets. We are looking for someone who is not only energetic and eager to work collaboratively but also thrives in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will actively engage in producing innovative marketing deliverables for the CIU, ranging from social media campaigns to multimedia content creation. Additionally, they will collaborate with colleagues to establish and deliver a comprehensive marketing strategy, from brand awareness to key messaging for the new ET programme. The ability to manage multiple projects efficiently, communicate clearly and effectively, and demonstrate adaptability, creativity, and strong attention to detail are essential qualities for success in this role.”
Sophie Pitcher, Senior Marketing Manager, Mobile for Development

About the role

We are looking for a creative, confident, organised and detail-oriented Marketing Specialist, to support the CIU and ET programmes, bringing creative ideas, alternative perspectives and delivering projects with challenging and dynamic deadlines.

The role will sit within the M4D Marketing Team, with most of the time being focused on delivering the marketing requirements for the CIU and ET programme, including but not limited to email newsletter communications, website management, content design, publication of material, writing social media and supporting event marketing production and activities.

Key responsibilities will include:

•    Leading all marketing and content dissemination.
•    Copy-edit, proofread and publish blogs and resources on the M4D website.
•    Act as the primary liaison for external suppliers (video agencies, copyeditors, translators, designers, etc.).
•    Management and maintenance of all external-facing collateral, including reports, videos, blogs, presentations, infographics, imagery, and website content.
•    Manage social media content that feeds into the M4D marketing process. Write copy and craft visual assets.
•    Manage all relevant marketing activity and processes for programme events, both internal and external audiences.
•    Built HTML newsletter and event invitation emails in Salesforce Marketing Cloud.
•    Audience development/outreach – proactive engagement in growing audience reach and optimising targeting.
•    Manage engagement metrics and reporting regularly on the performance of deliverables via the Looker Studio dashboard.
•    Ensure purchase orders and invoices are processed in good time, working with the appropriate Operations Manager/budget holder.
•    Ensure programmes have access to and are using up to date GSMA marketing and brand assets (i.e. logo, icons, etc.) and ensure appropriate imagery and donor acknowledgements are being used.
•    Additional tasks may be required as the need arises.

About you

•    You will have excellent English language, writing and speaking skills with a strong command of grammar.
•    You will have a background in marketing.
•    You will have the ability to communicate across multiple channels and build relationships with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures consistently and effectively.
•    You will possess strong organisational skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines simultaneously.
•    You will have good analytical skills, being able to track, measure and optimise across different channels and mediums.
•    You will demonstrate a willingness and skill to adapt to changing circumstances, in fast-moving environments.
•    You will have a good understanding of marketing best practices for web, email, and social media content, with experience in building emails using relevant software, along with publishing material on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. Knowledge of how to run campaigns that drive website traffic across multiple channels would be ideal.
•    You may already have experience with content management systems, such as WordPress, and familiarity with Salesforce and Google Analytics, which would be beneficial but not essential.
•    You might have the ability to design graphics for use on social media, websites and in email – experience using cloud-based tools (e.g., Canva) or Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop/InDesign) is advantageous.
•    You may have experience working with suppliers and agencies to deliver high-quality marketing outputs that include video content, PowerPoint presentations, infographics, and documents.
•    You will have a creative approach to projects, tasks and problem-solving, combined with a wish to constantly learn and improve.
•    You may have experience working in a corporate setting, which would be preferable, combined with marketing being ideal.
•    You will have a global mind-set and cultural awareness, with an interest in international development.
•    You are comfortable travelling globally, when circumstances allow, to GSMA events and activities.
