Workman Publishing’s children’s department is seeking a creative Design Assistant who will be responsible for tracking projects, preparing files for the printer, and helping our team develop new books. Our books include novelty, board books, middle grade, graphic novels, activity books, and workbooks.
We’re a small, collaborative team of editors and designers, and we ideate many of our projects in-house. The Design Assistant will work the art director on all levels of the design process, including conceptualizing, artist research and art direction, contracts, scheduling, approval, and production. This is an entry-level position with a lot of growth potential.
This is a NYC based role. Please note our current hybrid model is two days per week in the office. Effective in January 2025, HBG’s hybrid model will be 3 days in-office, 2 days working from home.
Essential duties:
- Design board books, and provide layout assistance on larger projects
- Support design department with production assistance
- Help research illustrators for new projects
- Do art corrections in Photoshop and Illustrator
- Check and package files for the printer
- Maintain our art tracker to help the whole team to stay updated on the status of all projects
- Take notes during weekly production meetings and follow up with team members on next steps
- Perform other administrative tasks, such as contract and invoice requests
Requirements:
- Entry-level position. Previous industry experience is welcome but not required.
- BFA in graphic design or a related field
- Very organized and detail-oriented
- Can work independently and collaboratively
- Strong communication skills
- Intermediate skills in InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
- Airtable knowledge a plus
- Eager to learn more about developing children’s books, design, and illustration

The compensation range for this position is $47,500. Salary can vary based on a number of factors including skills, experience, and location — talk with your recruiter to learn more.
