Director of Software Engineering, Factory Automation

Hadrian — Manufacturing the Future

Hadrian is building autonomous factories that help aerospace and defense companies make rockets, jets, and satellites 10x faster and 2x cheaper. Our CEO, Chris Power, discusses the importance of what we're building in this video.

We are a lean but mighty team (and growing!) people that are passionate about building critical infrastructure to support the nation and the advancement of humanity.

To support our ambitious vision, we have raised > $200M from Lux Capital, A16Z, Founders Fund, Construct Capital, Caffeinated Capital, and more.

Factory Automation

Hadrian’s Factory Automation team partners with our R&D, Robotics, and Manufacturing Automation teams to build and scale autonomous robotic production cells. These autonomous cells typically have a user interface for interaction and control of the cell, backend scheduling software to prioritize work and execute manufacturing sequences, and edge computing to control hardware such as CNC machines and robots.

To date, Hadrian has built systems to automate high-precision machining, CMM quality inspections, and cutting tool assembly. As the business continues to expand into new factories and additional manufacturing processes, the Factory Automation team will expand capabilities, productionize and scale existing systems, and own the software stack that drives production of aerospace parts.

Responsibilities

  • Leadership: Recruit, lead, and develop a multidisciplinary engineering team responsible for scaling automated robotic manufacturing cells. Drive technical decision-making processes and set engineering direction while also building a culture of continuous improvement.

  • Ownership: Work with operations and engineering leadership to set business objectives and roadmap. Ensure seamless integration of automated manufacturing systems into Hadrian factories. Manage schedule, budget, and resources to meet aggressive development timelines. Willing to do whatever it takes to deliver business outcomes.

  • Product Development: Design systems with Hadrian’s operation team in mind. Ensure that quality systems are built that exceed business expectations. Obsessed with perfection and customer experience.

  • Hardware Experience: Develop software to interface with physical systems such as robots, CNC machines, and other manufacturing equipment. Comfortable working on a factory floor around CNC machines and industrial robots. Not afraid of metal shavings and coolant.

  • Data Driven: Own key operational metrics driving maximum utilization of our factory CapEx. Collect data from connected devices that feed operational planning and factory scheduling. Foster a vision that aligns with both short term and long term business goals.

  • Strategic Communications: Present technical progress to executive leadership, including the CEO. Work with other engineering leaders to set standards, processes, and best practices to ensure development velocity and system reliability. Raise the bar across the engineering organization.

  • Hands-On Engineer: Lead by example, actively contributing to the codebase. Encourage software development best practices and foster an environment that encourages engineers to build amazing systems. Sit out on the manufacturing floor next to world's best CAM programmers and manufacturing engineers.

Qualifications

  • Track record of operating high-performing engineering teams. At least 3 years managing a large engineering team (15+ engineers)

  • 10+ years of full stack software engineering experience. Deep experience architecting and operating fault-tolerant, distributed, autonomous systems.

  • Experience developing software to interface with physical systems in a field such as robotics, manufacturing, industrial automation, or 3D printing.

  • Proven track record leading entire product lifecycle, from ideation to launch and beyond. Responsible for both ensuring that products meet customer needs and business goals, while also managing and mentoring product teams.

  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions with incomplete information and deliver complex systems on schedule

  • Adaptable leader, comfortable making decisions with incomplete information and pivoting based on constantly changing business objectives.

  • Expertise in secure software practices, cybersecurity for IoT devices, and regulatory compliance.

  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills

Compensation and Benefits
