Job Description

This position will provide leadership for the overall direction, goals and objectives for technology and technology-driven services within the University Libraries, serve as a member of the Libraries' management team, and lead staff in the identification of digital resource needs and solutions.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Serve as manager of the Systems department and supervise 2 professional staff
  • Serve as manager of the Interlibrary loan department and supervise 1.5 classified staff
  • Assist with education and training of all library staff in the specialized use of technology
  • Provide guidance in best practices, standards, and in the development and implementation of technology driven services
  • Represent the Library in campus level technology discussions
  • Maintain a strong cooperative relationship with Library departments/units and other areas of the University concerned with technology policy, planning, and implementation
This position will also fulfill duties expected of all Library faculty members, including
  • Participate in reference program
  • Serve as a bibliographer to designated academic departments and oversee the selection of materials in assigned subject areas
  • Work to develop and maintain good relations with departmental faculty members in assigned subject areas
  • Participate in the Library's instruction program
  • Participate in professional service, including university and library committees and task forces
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
  • M.L.S., M.L.I.S. or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited program by date of hire
  • Demonstrated experience with multiple computer platforms
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated good organizational skills and an aptitude for analytical and detailed work
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a complex, rapidly changing and professionally diverse environment
  • Demonstrated understanding of standards and best practices for managing content management systems, metadata creation, digitization, etc.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of MS Office, Google suite, other routine information technology applications employed at the library or university level, and systems employed for the management of library collections and/or the provision of library services
Preferred Qualifications
  • Post MLS Experience within an academic library
  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience in implementing technologies or services, e.g. virtual servers or immersive technologies
  • Experience with relational databases such as SQL, MySQL, SOLR or MS Access
  • Experience and knowledge of metadata and content standards such as MARC, EAD, Dublin Core, AACR2, etc.
  • Familiarity with of digital objects in various formats (text, image, audio and/or video) and best practices and standards associated with each format
  • Experience with markup languages such as HTML and XML; style sheets such as CSS and XSL; and other XML-related technologies
  • Experience with Java, JavaScript, Perl, UNIX shell scripting, PHP, or similar
  • Familiarity with Windows and/or Linux server configuration and maintenance
  • Familiarity with cloud-based computing
  • Familiarity with digital repositories, online publishing platforms or content management systems
  • Familiarity with programming and application creation for mobile environments
  • Familiarity with advanced XML and related technologies such as XSLT, XQuery
