The Head of Technology provides leadership and management for all information technology services and operations for the organization. The Head of Technology is to participate in the development of applicable and appropriate recommendations for improvement to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization’s information technology services and operations to support the mission of the organization.

The Head of Technology also represents the organization in with the corporate headquarters, professional organizations, customer organizations, and vendor organizations. The Head of Technology keeps abreast of information technology advancements and their utility for the organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide leadership in the selection, design, implementation, integration and on-going support for all the information technology systems within the organization.
  • Develop and communicate technical strategy to align current capabilities, emerging technologies, products serving the market, and long-term vision with business, operations, and technical teams.
  • Create overall technology standards and practices and ensure adherence.
  • Works in a consultative fashion across the organization to act as an advisor for technologies that may improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Oversee all architectural designs and changes in business and system architectures.
  • Responsible for the rolling 5-year capital plan for information technology, including hardware, software, storage, network and delivery infrastructure. This plan must also include technology that will support collaboration within an organization with 2 centers.
  • Provide leadership for the continual development of new software tools and database platforms to optimize the usability of company’s electronic content for the customers.
  • Ensure that all IT staff skills are up-to-date and that they maintain their competency.
  • Responsible for the selection, design, implementation, integration and on-going support for all the information technology systems within the organization.
  • Responsible for keeping up-to-date on the current information technology and to understand how to apply the new technology within the company to maintain currency.
  • Provide regular status reports to senior management of the company or Hearst regarding projects, policies and operations.
  • Assist in the planning, design, and development of key software components of clinical applications. This includes the direction of all aspects of the software development life cycle.
  • Manage staffing, performance appraisals, counseling, career development, and training. Serve as mentor and coach to the reporting teams.
  • Engage with business groups to facilitate clear understanding of business needs
  • Coordinate and communicate efforts with other departments and areas of responsibility, providing a high degree of transparency into plans, limitations, and progress of testing effort.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • The Head of Technology should have at least 5 years of increasingly responsible experience in a leadership position in an electronic publishing company, health care organization, or similar complex organization
  • There needs to be evidence of technology applications to publishing, health care, customer service, logistics, or similar experiences.
  • Must demonstrate an ability to identify information technology trends and exercise sound judgment in the creation of the 5-year capital plan.
  • Ability to plan and manage for large-scale or multiple small-scale technology changes in a dynamic and complex environment.
  • Ability to lead all IT staff for the promotion of a strong service orientation and the development of new software tools for the internal and external customers.
  • Must demonstrate sound financial management skills.
  • Hands on experience with complex project management.

In accordance with applicable law, Hearst is required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role if hired in Los Angeles, CA. The reasonable estimate, if hired in Los Angeles, is $199,000 - $252,000. Please note this information is specific to those hired in location. If this role is open to candidates outside of location, the salary range would be aligned to that specific location. A final decision on the successful candidate’s starting salary will be based on a number of permissible, non-discriminatory factors, including but not limited to skills and experience, training, certifications, and education.
