Healthy Living Attendant

General Function:

Under the direction of the Fitness Director and consistent with the Christian mission, the Fitness Center Attendant is responsible for the safety and supervision of the fitness center and all participants therein as well as to maintain maintenance & cleaning of the equipment and the entire fitness center and related exercise spaces. In addition, the incumbent will be responsible for assigned shift(s), finding coverage when needed and notifying the director, and working in appropriate YMCA uniform.


Principal Activities:

  • Supervise the fitness center and other related areas for member safety & engagement.
  • Provide exceptional customer service at all times.
  • Provide instructions for member use of equipment.
  • Responsible for monitoring execution of member exercises for safety and effectiveness.
  • Responsible for encouraging and supporting all members.
  • Assist in delivery of fitness center programs and service evaluations.
  • Assist with development and implementation of member retention programs.
  • Promote the YMCA facilities, programs and events.
  • Willingness to help maintain order of weights in free weight area.
  • Responsible for attending dept staff meetings and branch events.
  • Responsible for enforcing branch and fitness center policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for regular cleaning and upkeep of all equipment in the fitness and cardio centers.
  • Responsible for reporting all equipment repair issues to the Director.
  • Willingness to serve as part of the health and fitness team by assisting with departmental special events in an effort to promote themselves, class and program

Know-How:

  • Minimum of High School diploma
  • Working knowledge of exercise equipment
  • Must be CPR/AED certified
  • Basic knowledge of applicable software applications.
  • Must be attentive to details, be able to work with and meet deadlines, take initiative to develop and provide information and controls necessary for efficient office operations.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be able to take initiative in making decisions and solving problems in the areas of assigned responsibilities.
  • Ability to represent the YMCA in a mature and professional manner.
  • Ability to work efficiently independently and as part of a team.
  • Display a personal commitment to consistent quality customer service.

  • Mission Delivery
  • Steady growth and retention of members.
  • Assuring clean & well-maintained department(s) equipment and facilities.
  • High morale and satisfaction of fellow staff, volunteers, members and participants.
  • Quality of program, customer and member service delivery.
  • Assuring Safety & liability of programs/staff/participants.
  • Attention to detail and follow through in the execution of all job components.
  • Positive attitude and enthusiastic performance of duties.
  • Effectiveness will also be measured by the extent of which the incumbent is a supportive staff member achieving the overall goals of the Sumter Family YMCA.
