Associate Dean of Academic Affairs/ Chief Learning Officer, Workman School of Dental Medicine

The Associate Dean of Academic Affairs will be a key leadership position within the Workman School of Dental Medicine. This individual will be responsible for shaping the strategic direction of the academic programs, ensuring operational excellence, and driving the overall success of the dental school's academic mission. The Associate Dean will ensure that the academic operations are aligned with the institution’s mission, vision, and goals, and will play a crucial role in the successful launch and continued growth of the school. Finally, the Associate Dean will have oversite to a largely collaborative team to aid in sustainability of current efforts and for implementation of new initiatives within a start-up academic culture.

Qualifications:

Education: PhD, DMD, DDS or equivalent doctoral degree in a relevant field.

Experience, Training, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A minimum of 5 years of academic experience with at least 5 years of administrative/ leadership experience in healthcare-related education.
  • Proven history of leadership and strategic planning in an academic setting.
  • Strong understanding of curriculum development, accreditation processes, and academic policies.
  • Proven record of workflow development and policy implementation.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Experience in mentoring both students and junior faculty.
  • Strong collaborative interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to fostering a supportive academic environment.
  • Ability to model self-awareness and lead with emotional intelligence.
  • Ability to exemplify core values of collaboration, integrity, growth mindset, collaboration, and innovation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in starting or significantly expanding academic programs.
  • Knowledge of current trends and innovations in graduate education.
  • Strong understanding of best practices in higher education.
  • Data-driven decision maker.
  • Thrives in a student-first environment.
  • Experience with high-level academic meetings with the Provost or Academic Affairs Office.
  • Experience with budget management and resource allocation.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Strategic Planning, Leadership, and Implementation:

  • Develop and execute strategic academic plans that support the mission, vision, and values of the dental school.
  • Collaborate with the Dean and other senior leaders to establish short-term and long-term academic goals.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive academic strategy that aligns contributions from multiple stakeholders-clinical, biomedical, behavioral, entrepreneurial, technology, and research viewpoints.
  • Provide oversight to key personnel within the Academic team, including Assistant Deans, Directors, Managers, etc. to aid in the launch of new initiatives, champion quality improvement, and foster an environment of autotomy with accountability.
  • Monitor and assess the effectiveness of academic strategies and make recommendations for improvements.

2. Curriculum Management with Development Support:

  • Provide leadership to the personnel in Curriculum Innovation roles.
  • Monitor and provide oversight to the design, development, and continuous improvement of the dental school’s curriculum.
  • Ensure the curriculum meets accreditation standards via best practices to prepare students for professional success.
  • Foster innovation in teaching methodologies and the integration of technology into educational and professional environments.

3. Faculty Recruitment and Development:

  • Monitor and participate in the recruitment, hiring, and retention of high-caliber faculty and staff members.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of faculty development programs to enhance teaching, research, advocacy, leadership, clinical skills, and more.
  • Provide leadership and support for faculty development programs, including mentorship, training, and evaluation.
  • Promote a collaborative and inclusive academic culture.

5. Student Success and Support:

  • Develop and maintain oversight to implement strategies that enhance student recruitment, retention, and success.
  • Monitor student advising, support services, and extracurricular activities.
  • Ensure that students receive a high-quality educational experience that promotes growth and professional development.

6. Budget and Resource Management:

  • Assist in the development and management of the academic budget.
  • Allocate and optimize resources effectively to support academic programs and initiatives.

7. Collaboration and Communication:

  • Foster strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including other academic units, clinical partners, and industry leaders.
  • Represent the dental school at academic, professional, and community events.
  • Communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders about academic initiatives and policies.

Accountability: 

  • This position will report to the Dean with input from Executive Leadership Team members.
  • Evaluation: Ongoing performance reviews are conducted along with an annual assessment by the Dean, which includes input from the faculty, personnel, and learners.
