Role Overview

UChicago Hillel is seeking a dynamic and creative Director of Student and Community Engagement to join our professional team. We are looking for someone with energy, superb organizational and communication skills, and a strong commitment to Jewish life. You will build relationships with students, while creating programs around campus that are impactful, and of high quality.   

We have an estimated 800 Jewish students at the University of Chicago and there is not a one size fits all approach for how we can reach them all.  You will have the chance to learn from what works, build connections between students and have the opportunity to develop meaningful Jewish experiences.  In addition, you will be part of a team that is creating interfaith, social justice, and social change impact on campus and the Southside community.  

What You’ll Do

  • Design and implement an engagement plan to strategically build relationships. 
  • Mentor student leaders in their Jewish growth through individual meetings and group trainings, to cultivate a Jewish community that is caring, diverse, welcoming, and actively inclusive. 
  • Contribute to program development, manage logistics, and collaborate with staff and student leaders to ensure the execution of Shabbat, holiday celebrations, and small to large-scale events. 
  • In partnership with other university departments support programs that support the greater southside community  
  • Supervise student interns, student leaders, and their committees who are responsible for engaging their peers in Jewish life on campus. 
  • Advise student leaders and student groups in planning, publicity/marketing, implementing, budgeting, and assessing programs and events.  
  • Maintain program attendance records for measurement and ongoing evaluation purposes. 
  • Other responsibilities as assigned. 

What You’ll Bring to the Job

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2-4 years of full-time professional work experience. 
  • Participation in student life and organizations during your college career. 
  • Confidence developing and running initiatives and comfort asking questions. 
  • Desire to motivate student leaders to engage their peers, deepen their Jewish identities, and think innovatively about program content and marketing. 
  • Exemplary time management skills, including the capacity to juggle competing priorities and deadlines, and to remain flexible within an ambiguous, fast-paced environment. 
  • A commitment to pluralism and comfort with your Jewish identity so you may act as a role model and mentor for emerging Jewish adults. 
  • Owning your unique Jewish knowledge and experiences and inspiring others to be on a Jewish journey. 
  • Strong written and verbal skills. 

What You’ll Receive

The Newberger Hillel offers a competitive salary in the nonprofit marketplace along with a comprehensive benefits package. The salary range for this role is $55,000-$65,000The position includes Jewish professional growth opportunities, great supervision, and work on a college campus with a dynamic, collaborative team.
