Managing Editor of Content and Audience Growth

Chron’s Managing Editor of Content Development and Audience Growth would drive the newsroom’s coverage across News, Sports, Culture, Food, Real Estate channels, and oversee the audience team to deliver results.

We want a senior leader who knows what Houstonians care about and who will guide editors to develop coverage plans and special content initiatives that capture this changing and vibrant city in unique ways. This person plays a key role in coaching editors toward success using metrics and a developing toolkit of tips and learning sessions, while assuring that storytelling finds emotional connections for readers that illuminate, or challenge, locals’ love for the area.

In this role, the ideal candidate will bring a digital-first mindset, a deep understanding of Houston, and a collaborative spirit to encourage newsroom experimentation to grow Chron’s audience both on- and off-platform.

The Managing Editor will work closely with the Executive Editor and other editors to ensure that all content meets the highest standards of quality, accuracy, and timeliness.

 

The Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily coverage on the site across all verticals, providing direction to senior editors and the audience team to ensure that content is compelling for a Houston audience and reflects sound reporting, a creative POV and distinctive voice for the brand
  • Develop processes to support a digital-first newsroom, including content calendars, promotional plans, trainings, and more
  • Be an expert in current trends, issues and topics affecting Houston, and regularly share those insights and supporting audience data with the newsroom to guide daily newsroom decision making and the development of new content initiatives 
  • Be a newsroom leader, including running meetings with editors and providing regular feedback to staff, in close collaboration with the Executive Editor
  • Provide editing support and occasionally write both features and news stories that demonstrate solid reporting and unique storytelling
  • Plan and maintain an editorial calendar, staff onboarding, trainings, budgets and other administrative processes 
  • Work closely with editorial leadership to set the editorial tone, assuring daily coverage reflects the brand’s vision and voice

 

Requirements

  • 7+ years of relevant experience in writing, editing, and managing writers, editors or producers in publishing or digital media
  • Experience in, and understanding of, Texas
  • Top-notch reporting, writing and editing skills
  • Excellent news judgment and understanding of both media ethics and AP Style
  • Strong analytical skills and an ability to use data to make editorial decisions
  • Experience managing or mentoring other writers
  • Facility with content management systems, analytics tools like Google Trends, social media platforms, and other publishing tools
