Clinical Nurse Educator/ Residency Coordinator

POSITION PURPOSE

Under general supervision of the Education/ Staff Development Director, the RN Educator is responsible for the overall nurse residency program in support of the professional model of nursing practice at Huntsville Memorial Hospital and provides clerical and instructional support related to staff development and education for the institution. The incumbent is responsible for the assessment of orientation and training program needs, development, and execution of program objectives, and evaluation and ongoing improvement of a competency based orientation for the nurse resident. Promote professional role development and growth along the continuum from novice to expert.  Assist department directors/ managers and staff in developing and maintaining their competencies, advancing their professional practice, and facilitating their achievement of academic and career goals.  Identify opportunities to improve processes and mitigate risks to the patient, staff, and hospital.

 

Serves as a partner for practice transition, change agent, mentor, leader, champion of scientific inquiry, advocate for the employees, and facilitate learning.  Create and implement cost-effective, efficient, and timely education using innovative teaching methods and technology to motivate and educate staff to adopt new practice changes incorporating evidence-based practices promoting positive patient outcomes.  Assist in leading staff, managing programs and projects, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and evaluating outcomes.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Oversees the graduate nurse residency program curriculum, in collaboration with the Director the Chief Nursing Officer, and Nursing Directors.
  • Refines and maintains the Nurse Residency Program to meet educational support needs of the nursing department staff with specific focus on post-graduate nurse residents at Huntsville Memorial Hospital.
  • Assists with coordinating classes, group sessions, and other activities that constitute the program curriculum, which are based on adult learning principles.
  • Selects varied teaching strategies, as appropriate, for classroom and clinical learning experiences utilizing adult learning principles, and develops and implements innovative models of instruction to support learning in seminars and at the bedside.
  • Mentor residents by observing and evaluating their practice in collaboration with preceptors, nurse directors and managers, Staff Development Manager, and the Chief Nursing Officer and recommend changes, as warranted, using evidence-based approach to practice.
  • Provide leadership to preceptors and other educators in evaluating clinical performance against practice standards and providing feedback on performance to the learner, the nurse directors and managers, Staff Development Manager, and the Chief Nursing Officer.
  • Interacts with staff in an ethical, consistent, fair, timely, appropriate, and decisive manner in accordance with hospital and nursing policies.
  • Acts in a leadership role for the nurse residency program, articulating program needs, and reporting program outcomes and/or issues to the Staff Development Manager.
  • Functions as a liaison between disciplines and departments in assuring a smoothly coordinated residency program, including facilitating meetings, identifying and responding to daily problems, and communicating and collaborating with many different members of the care team.
  • Identifies factors that affect the resident’s ability to learn and fulfill his/her job responsibilities, progression within the program, and retention and then communicates recommendations, as needed, to the preceptor, the nurse director or manager, and Staff Development Manager.
  • Actively participates in committee appointments, strategic planning, ad hoc projects, and educational activities as assigned by the Staff Development Manager.
  • Promotes and cultivates positive relationships with academic programs to foster a positive image with Huntsville Memorial Hospital Residency Program.
  • Displays professional behavior at all times serving as an advocate for HMH and advising and instructing staff accordingly.
  • Abides by the HMH Legal Compliance Code of Conduct.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and appropriate handling of PHI.
  • Maintains a safe work environment and reports safety concerns appropriately.
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory meetings and education requirements. 
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

LATITUDE, CONTACTS/INTERACTIONS

All positions of Huntsville Memorial Hospital are part of an interdisciplinary team, and as such, participate in the care and service delivery process through effective interaction with other team members.  Primarily interacts with hospital staff, medical staff, patients, and visitors.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing program required.

Experience: 5 years of clinical nursing experience in an acute care setting required.

Licensure/Certification:

-Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Texas required. 

-Advanced Cardiac Life Support & Pediatric Advanced Life Support (or ENPC) certifications required within 90 days of hire. 

-Basic Life Support certification required upon hire.

Required Skills:

-Excellent oral/ written communication skills, organizational and presentation skills.

-Proficient in computer and internet/ intranet use.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Frequent: standing, walking, reaching, bending, squatting, and kneeling.

Occasional: sitting, lifting, and carrying.

Visual and hearing acuity required.  Work is inside, with good ventilation and comfortable temperature.

Possible exposure to: toxic/caustic chemicals or detergents, communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens.
