Special Olympics Michigan (SOMI) is seeking a part-time AmeriCorps member to serve as an Inclusive Health Coach. We are recruiting a part-time AmeriCorps member to be a part of our team for either 4 or 10 months. The position will remain open until filled. Positions are available in Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Southeast (Detroit Area) in Michigan. The exact start and end date of the contract position is confirmed during the interview and selection process, and will likely occur in late August or early September. This is an AmeriCorps position and the individual selected to serve is not considered to be an employee of Special Olympics Michigan.

WHAT WE DO

The mission of Special Olympics Michigan is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities in the state of Michigan. Athletes are given continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness and athletic skill, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.

YOUR ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES AS AN AMERICORPS MEMBER

This is an AmeriCorps position and as such, the member may not engage in prohibited activities as part of his/her/their service. The member will have an immediate supervisor at their host site and a Special Olympics Michigan AmeriCorps program director throughout the term of service for coaching, mentoring, and training support in order to undertake activities to achieve a community goal.

The member is expected to undertake the following activities toward goal achievement:

  • Plan Young Athletes or SOMIFit sessions using the applicable developed curriculum.
  • Facilitate Young Athletes/SOMIFit activities for program participants.
  • Conduct, track, and submit participant attendance, program surveys, and other data collection methods as determined by the Program Director.
  • Assist Program Director in placing orders and distributing resources to support program activities (guidebooks, play kits).
  • Communicate with parents regularly on ways to facilitate at-home physical activity and motor-skills development.
  • Plan and organize Family Health Forums to encourage whole family participation.
  • Facilitate other Health and Wellness Activities related to service activities with approval from Program Director
  • Support SOMI and/or partner site events and activities with duties which are in alignment with the grant and not unallowable or prohibited activities and which do not take time away from the essential functions of the member position.
  • Participate in the planning and execution of Young Athletes exhibitions and Family Health Forums at SOMI state, regional, and local events.
  • Participate in the planning and execution of other Health and Wellness opportunities at SOMI state, regional, and local events (i.e., Performance Stations)
  • Participate in optional service projects and national days of service

In performing these activities, Special Olympics Michigan AmeriCorps anticipates that the person in this position will achieve the following goal(s):

  • Engage 10 new (episodic) volunteers.
  • Engage 50 athletes with and without intellectual disabilities in health and fitness programming.
  • Significantly contribute to addressing community health needs.

SKILLS NEEDED

  • Desire and ability to work with a diverse group of people, particularly those with intellectual disabilities
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Strong computer skills and comfort with social media and web-based programs
  • Strong organizational, written and oral communication skills, and strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule
  • Strong desire to enhance the health of community members
  • High school diploma or GED

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

The candidate will need to meet all AmeriCorps eligibility requirements including but not limited to:

  • Be at least 18 years of age (there is no upper age limit)
  • Possess unexpired proof of status as a US citizen or possess unexpired permanent resident status and be able to provide documentation as determined by AmeriCorps during the pre-enrollment period
  • Meet the National Service Criminal History Check Requirement noted below

NATIONAL SERVICE CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECK REQUIREMENT

If a candidate has a criminal record, it does not necessarily make him/her/them ineligible for service. SOMI does not disclose any results with the host site and will discuss any eligibility concerns that may arise directly with the candidate as per SOMI’s policy.

Candidates being offered and accepting this AmeriCorps position must consent to a search of the National Sex Offender Public Website, State Level Criminal History Search, and an FBI search.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $14.00 - $16.00 per hour
