Inpatient Coder Analyst

Summary:
Assigns diagnostic and procedure codes to inpatient and outpatient medical records; abstracts specific information from inpatient and outpatient medical record. Evaluates cases for billing appropriateness; operates personal computer, including 3M Codefinder, and all appropriate mainframe applications.

1.Formal Education Required:
  • Minimum of an Associate Degree in Applied Sciences in Health Information Technology or Nursing.
  • Possess or obtain the credentials of RHIA, RHIT and/or CSS within one (1) year of employment to be eligible for this position.
  • RHIAs or RHITs who do not possess the CCS or CPC credential at the time of application must obtain such certification within one (1) year of employment.

2.Experience & Training Required:
  • Applicants without a degree but holding a credential of CCS with a minimum of four (4) years of confirmed hospital coding experience will also be considered as qualified for this position.
  • Sufficient skills should be acquired to reach a proficiency score of 92% within the first six (6) months, and a proficiency score of 98% should be obtained within the first one (1) year of employment.

  • Anticipates customer’s needs and responds readily.
  • Welcomes customers in a friendly manner.
  • Communicates with courtesy, clarity and care; Always identifies self and department when placing and receiving calls.
  • Remains calm when communicating difficult situations; acknowledges and apologizes to customers when delays have occurred.
  • Sensitive to cultural, age, gender, education, and religious diversity, and communicates in a manner respectful to others.
  • Dresses in accordance with the dress code policy. Always properly wears Summa identification badge above waist level and facing forward at all times.
  • Apparel is always clean, professional, tasteful, tidy and discreet. Maintains good personal hygiene.
  • Follows safety procedures at all times; proactively takes steps to maintain safety of customers. Uses proper body mechanics and assistive devices as needed.
  • Complies with Summa policies regarding confidentiality, privacy, safety and security.

4.Level of Physical Demands:
  • Sedentary: Exerts up to ten pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently.
  • Requires sitting for prolonged periods of time.
  • Requires correct vision and hearing to normal range.
  • Requires bending, squatting, reaching and stair climbing occasionally.
  • Exposure to changes of temperature or humidity and exposure to dust, fumes or gas occasionally.
  • Requires dexterity in fingers and piecework
