The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization.


The Nutrition Security internship offers the opportunity to gain professional experience with a national non-profit organization where nutrition is a top priority. The American Heart Association improves access to healthy food by strengthening systems and supporting consumers in making healthy choices. The intern would have a passion for identifying gaps and solutions supporting the American Heart Association’s nutrition business plan and strategies.

Individuals will obtain practical experience and receive hands-on training in various disciplines, including nutrition education program development and evaluation, literature review, assessing gaps and opportunities for program development and revision, analyzing communication tactic outcomes, copyediting, writing, presentation development, and oral communication.

Internship Overview:

  • Time Commitment: 20-25 hours per week
  • Internship Duration: 9/11/23 – 12/8/2023
  • Remote position
  • Salary: $23.00 per hour

Internship Outcomes:

Individuals participating in the internship program are provided with an opportunity to:

  • Gain important and practical job skills to be successful in a non-profit environment.
  • Opportunity to explore a career-path with a reputable voluntary health/service organization.
  • Gain experience in the professional world while learning about board management.
  • Complete an internship that enriches your academic and professional resume as well as enriches your personal life by making a difference in the lives of others.
Responsibilities:

Tasks could include things like the following:

  • Research and reporting
    • Conduct research using online sources (e.g., food and nutrition issues, stakeholders, trends, etc.). Individuals with nutrition expertise will include scientific literature in research where relevant.
    • Present research findings internally to inform programs.
  • Marketing & communications support
    • Develop promotional resources for Cooperative Extension engagement.
    • Edit materials (e.g., slide decks, one-pagers, etc.) and coordinate review with internal stakeholders.
    • Map out topics and/or write for monthly Healthy for Life and/or Industry Nutrition Forum e-newsletters.
  • Resource and content audit
    • Conduct an audit of existing materials to identify gaps with respect to topics (within the scope of American Heart Association’s scientific statements), budget-friendly guidance, and cultural relevance, informing new resource development.
  • Administrative support
    • Develop materials for meetings (e.g., attendance list, agenda, speaker bios, etc.).

Qualifications:
  • Effective oral (one-on-one and group; virtual meetings; phone), written (consumer-facing educational resources, email) and presentation communication skills.
  • Ability to deal professionally in a corporate and non-profit environment and assume responsibility for guiding projects from inception through completion.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office software
  • Minimum availability: 20 hours per week, M-F between the hours of 8:30am-5pm (days per week are flexible, but regular schedule required).
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future. For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
  • Required Equipment:
    • Reliable WiFi Connection

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Undergraduate course work in human nutrition and foods, food science, food systems, and/or culinary arts.
  • Bi-lingual (Spanish)
