INTERN - PROGRAMME MANAGEMENT [Temporary]

The role of the EOSG is to support the Secretary-General in performing the function as "chief administrative officer" of the Organization, who shall act in that capacity and perform "such other functions as are entrusted" by the Security Council, General Assembly, Economic and Social Council and other United Nations organs. The Charter also empowers the Secretary-General to "bring to the attention of the Security Council any matter which in his opinion may threaten the maintenance of international peace and security." These guidelines both define the powers of the office and grant it considerable scope for action.

Within the EOSG, the Sustainable Development Unit works towards the promotion and implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, among others. Its strategy is aimed at leveraging the unique position, role and convening power of the Secretary-General and the Deputy Secretary-General towards maintaining momentum, accelerating implementation, and promoting ambition on Sustainable Development Goals and climate action. The Sustainable Development Unit also supports the strategic engagement of the Secretary-General and the Deputy Secretary-General on sustainable development issues, including financing for development, social protection and jobs, environment and climate action, gender equality, global health, data, food security and related issues.

We seek motivated interns to support the work of the Executive Office of the United Nations Secretary-General in the Sustainable Development Unit (SDU).

The internship is for a minimum period of two months and maximum period of six months. Internships are either on a part-time or full-time basis for five days per week and internships primarily remote though some in-person positions are available under this vacancy.

Interns report to full-time professional staff in the Sustainable Development Unit.

The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern. Interns are required to work 35 hours per week.

Responsibilities
The following duties are performed by interns::

  • Provide policy analysis in the context of the Decade of Action for the Delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), collaborating across the different areas of work and supporting coordination efforts with relevant divisions of EOSG and with United Nations Agencies.
  • Help monitor, identify and analyze geographic, political and thematic global trends, with particular attention to impacts on gender equality and vulnerable groups, on a variety of issues including the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, macroeconomic trends, the digital and energy transitions, food systems, the environment, public health, , science and technology, jobs and SDG data.
  • Support the preparation of analytical reports, papers, talking points, background notes, correspondences, key messages, video remarks, interviews, and daily briefs.
  • Assist in coordinating the formulation of workplans, strategies, programmes, and policies.
  • Support the preparation of meetings, events, summits, talks, and visits.
  • Helping prepare presentations and other communication material, as required.
  • Drafting minutes of meetings and ensuring timely follow-up.

There are seven thematic tracks for internships with the Sustainable Development Unit (please specify which track you are best suited to in your cover letter):

1. DATA: Contributing to the implementation of priority use cases under the Secretary-General’s Data Strategy including assisting with data financing fundraising efforts, supporting advocacy efforts to fill SDG data gaps and improving distribution of United Nations data.

2. HEALTH: Supporting the Secretary-General’s efforts to end the pandemic through a comprehensive health response by advocating for a Global COVID-19 Vaccination Strategy, pushing forward work on pandemic preparedness, universal health coverage and mental health advocacy as well as monitoring the follow up to the Food System Summit.

3. FINANCE AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC RECOVERY FROM COVID-19: Assisting with analysis and research for the stocktaking of the Secretary-General’s Finance Strategy for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the drafting of the updated strategy post-2021 in line with Our Common Agenda. Supporting workstreams under the Financing for Development in the Era of COVID-19 pandemic and Beyond, and preparations for upcoming events, including the proposed Bridgetown 2.0 Summit, the Macron Summit in France, and the Biennial Summit of ECOSOC, the G20 and IFIs. Pushing SDG acceleration strategies and efforts to expand social protection and support to decent work, including through support to the operationalization of the Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for Just transitions. Supporting the Special Envoy on Financing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development on an ad-hoc basis, including in the lead-up to COP28.

4. ENVIRONMENT: Pushing for the implementation of the Paris Agreement through related process such as the UN Ocean Conference, the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, the Local2030 process and the New Urban Agenda, among others.

5. REFORMS AND INTER-AGENCY COORDINATION: Supporting oversight and coordination of recommendations and follow up of intergovernmental decisions related to the Secretary-General’s Our Common Agenda’s report as they relate to sustainable development as well as the timely implementation of decisions taken by the Executive Committee related to sustainable development.

6. GOVERNANCE, PEACE AND SECURITY: Supporting analysis, initiatives, forums and engagements on humanitarian, peace and development matters. Contributing to monitoring, analysis and engagement on priority regions and countries, including the Sahel, the Horn of Africa, the Great Lakes Region, Haiti, Yemen, Iraq and Afghanistan. Contributing to aspects of the United Nations reform, particularly those that pertain to cross-pillar collaboration and coherence.

7. DISABILITY INCLUSION AND LEAVING NO ONE BEHIND: Supporting the coordinated implementation of the United Nations Disability Inclusion Strategy by entities and UN country teams across both programmes and operations, including by contributing to: collection and review of good practice; research, analysis and monitoring of the Strategy; provisioning of technical assistance; and outreach to external stakeholders, including organizations of persons with disabilities. Supporting analysis, initiatives, forums and engagements related to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda commitment to “Leave No One Behind”.

Education

Applicants to the United Nations Internship Programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

1) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent or higher such as Master's degree or equivalent, Ph.D. or postgraduate degree).

2) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent).

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice
Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. For internships in the United States of America, interns who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or not currently in the United States on a non-immigrant visa status will be required to obtain a G-4 visa. If already in the United States of America on another non-immigrant visa status other than G-4, interns will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and if required, employment authorization, allowing them to undertake the internship.

The intern must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship.   • Name of university and title of degree you are currently pursuing
  • Graduation date (when you expect to graduate from the programme)
  • A listing of IT skills and programmes that you are proficient in.
  • An explanation why you are the best candidate for an internship with the Office.
  • An explanation of your interest in the work of SDU and which of the five thematic tracks you are best suited to.
  • The date you are available and for how long.
  • Whether reasonable accommodation is required.
