The role of the EOSG is to support the Secretary-General in performing the function as "chief administrative officer" of the Organization, who shall act in that capacity and perform "such other functions as are entrusted" by the Security Council, General Assembly, Economic and Social Council and other United Nations organs. The Charter also empowers the Secretary-General to "bring to the attention of the Security Council any matter which in his opinion may threaten the maintenance of international peace and security." These guidelines both define the powers of the office and grant it considerable scope for action.
Within the EOSG, the Sustainable Development Unit works towards the promotion and implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, among others. Its strategy is aimed at leveraging the unique position, role and convening power of the Secretary-General and the Deputy Secretary-General towards maintaining momentum, accelerating implementation, and promoting ambition on Sustainable Development Goals and climate action. The Sustainable Development Unit also supports the strategic engagement of the Secretary-General and the Deputy Secretary-General on sustainable development issues, including financing for development, social protection and jobs, environment and climate action, gender equality, global health, data, food security and related issues.
We seek motivated interns to support the work of the Executive Office of the United Nations Secretary-General in the Sustainable Development Unit (SDU).
The internship is for a minimum period of two months and maximum period of six months. Internships are either on a part-time or full-time basis for five days per week and internships primarily remote though some in-person positions are available under this vacancy.
Interns report to full-time professional staff in the Sustainable Development Unit.
The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern. Interns are required to work 35 hours per week.

Keeps abreast of available technology. Understands applicability and limitations of technology to the work of the office. Actively seeks to apply technology to appropriate tasks. Shows willingness to learn new technology.
Applicants to the United Nations Internship Programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
1) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent or higher such as Master's degree or equivalent, Ph.D. or postgraduate degree).
