Under the direction of a supervising neurophysiologist, the Intraoperative Neuromonitoring (IONM) Technologist work alongside neurophysiologist and other physicians in the hospital during surgical procedures, monitoring the nervous system to reduce or avoid complications. Responsibilities include performing recording and monitoring in a variety of cases, such as brain and brainstem procedures for tumors, orthopedic spine procedures for scoliosis, and vascular surgery for aneurysm; aiding in patient preparation, conducting IONM (protecting the nervous system) and following up to ensure quality of care. Additionally, the IONM Technologist may be asked to provide support to inpatient EEG service for EEG and other evoked potentials, and performs other duties as assigned.
