Senior Infrastructure & Backend Engineer

Company Summary

Jamix creates AI systems for enterprise companies by connecting to their data and apps. This enables customers to get answers to their questions faster and to automate repetitive tasks. For example, we’re working with a sales organization to build a system that can answer questions about their accounts and customers. We’re also partnering with a well-known consulting firm to optimize their resume review process to minimize manual labor. To address these use cases we are working on the bleeding edge of generative AI.

We raised a $3M pre-seed round in 2023 led by Audacious Ventures. We're currently 6 people with an office in San Francisco. We work in the office 2 days per week and offer great benefits for medical, dental, vision, commuter, and 401(k).

Goals of the Role

The overarching goal of this role is to lead the infrastructure management, ensuring the company's infrastructure and security are efficiently maintained and improved upon. This role is designed for an individual who can seamlessly navigate the complexities of infrastructure management, security, and backend development, driving initiatives that support the company’s growth and operational efficiency. Within 6 months, a successful candidate will:

  1. Lead Infrastructure and Security Efforts (70% of the time)

    • Security and Compliance Leadership: The candidate will ensure the system's security is uncompromised and lead efforts to comply with relevant security standards. This involves both safeguarding the infrastructure from potential threats and ensuring it meets industry standards.

    • Maintain and Improve AWS Infrastructure: The infrastructure setup must be sustainable and scalable. Utilizing Pulumi with Python for Infrastructure as Code (IaC), the candidate is expected to enhance the current infrastructure, ensuring it can support the company's growth and technological demands.

    • Scalability of Servers: With technologies such as ECS and Kubernetes, the candidate will ensure our servers are capable of scaling to meet increased demands. Part of this will involve improving our job orchestration system to be more robust, allowing it to execute complex jobs efficiently and handle a larger volume of jobs without faltering.

    • Observability: Leveraging our current stack of Loki, Prometheus, and Grafana, the candidate will enhance the system's observability. This involves picking up the current implementations and improving them to ensure that system performance and issues can be monitored and addressed proactively.

  2. Develop Backend Features (30% of the time)

    • As a backend development generalist, the candidate will also contribute to feature development using Python. This involves working alongside the development team to build, refine, and implement new features and improvements to our products, ensuring they meet our standards of quality and innovation.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in infrastructure/security roles, with a demonstrated track record in managing and scaling cloud-based environments, preferably on AWS.

  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) is essential. Candidates should demonstrate successful projects where they have improved or implemented IaC practices.

  • Experience in container orchestration technologies, such as ECS and Kubernetes, is necessary. Candidates should have practical experience in scaling and managing containerized applications.

  • A background in developing and enhancing job orchestration systems to handle a high volume of complex jobs efficiently.

  • Proven experience in setting up and improving observability using tools such as Loki, Prometheus, and Grafana. Candidates should be able to showcase how their implementations have led to improved system performance and reliability.

  • Strong experience in leading security compliance projects, ensuring systems are secure and comply with relevant standards.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in Python for backend development, with a portfolio of projects that demonstrates a deep understanding of software development principles and practices.

  • Familiarity with modern development practices, including continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD), automated testing, and agile methodologies.

  • Solid understanding of network and security fundamentals, including but not limited to encryption technologies, authentication protocols, and security compliance frameworks.

Location and Availability

Candidates must be based in or willing to relocate to the San Francisco area. This role requires in-office presence two days a week as part of our hybrid work model. The ability to work effectively both in-office and remotely is essential.
