The Underwriting Manager plays a crucial role in supervising all underwriting functions across conforming and government channels, including wholesale, correspondent, and retail. This position requires a dynamic leader who can adeptly manage high-volume workflows while ensuring that their team consistently meets productivity benchmarks. A comprehensive understanding of the loan process, various mortgage documents, and investor requirements is essential. Additionally, the ideal candidate will showcase exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail, coupled with the ability to provide hands-on support, prioritize tasks effectively, and collaborate within a large team.
This is a Full-Time/Remote Opportunity offering competitive pay ranging from $120,000 - $140,000 annually.
Key Responsibilities:
Team Management
- Guide our underwriters to guarantee that mortgage loans are underwritten in alignment with all state and federal regulations, including RESPA, HMDA, and Section 32.
- Steer the underwriters to adhere to proper procedures for mortgage loan underwriting.
- Oversee and review day-to-day tasks that have been escalated by the team.
- Establish clear expectations and provide mentoring to our underwriting staff.
- Build, nurture, and lead a dynamic underwriting team capable of executing key initiatives.
- Ensure all team members are thoroughly trained and well-versed in the company's philosophy, policies, and procedures.
- Monitor and assess underwriter performance consistently.
- Evaluate the structure of the Underwriting team and strategize for ongoing enhancements in efficiency and effectiveness.
- Support the recruitment process by assisting in the interviewing and hiring of new team members.
- Execute additional responsibilities as assigned.
Process and Improvement
- Play a key role in shaping, executing, and overseeing the company’s underwriting operations.
- Regularly assess and refine workflows, developing helpful guides for all aspects of the underwriting process to maximize efficiency and effectiveness.
- Spot areas ripe for enhancement.
- Contribute to the planning, development, organization, implementation, and evaluation of the company’s underwriting strategies and performance metrics.
Communication & Collaboration
- Collaborate with other departments and provide counsel on a variety of underwriting issues.
- Manage and communicate business flow, regulatory, and investor’s guidelines.
- Serve as a liaison with Regional Sales Manager, Account Executive, Branch Managers, and Loan Officer to build trust, collaboration, and operational support to ensure production.
- Over 8 years of experience in mortgage underwriting or lending.
- A Bachelor’s Degree is preferred, but we'll consider a blend of relevant experience and education that showcases your capability to excel in this role.
- In-depth knowledge of underwriting policies and procedures is essential, along with familiarity with guidelines from various investors such as FNMA, FHLMC, FHA, VA, and USDA. DE and SAR certifications are a must!
- Current, advanced expertise in industry-specific underwriting standards and agency requirements is crucial.
- Demonstrated experience in leading a team of mortgage underwriters is required.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential for success in this role.
- Exceptional customer service abilities, especially in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
- Capable of analytical thinking, effective problem solving, and managing stress efficiently.
- Proficient in prioritizing and interpreting policies, programs, and guidelines.
- A keen eye for detail, excellent organizational skills, and strong communication abilities.
- Proficient in using Encompass, Fannie Mae’s Desktop Underwriter, Freddie Mac Loan Prospector, FHA connection, and other automated underwriting systems.
