The Team:

The Kraken Tax team plays a vital role in ensuring Kraken is tax compliant in every jurisdiction we operate in, and that Kraken’s financials accurately reflect Kraken’s tax position.  It consists of an agile team of tax professionals of a diverse background spread across the US, Europe, and APAC and holding a unique blend of best in class tax expertise, with a strong focus on technology and automation.  The team embraces hyper-transparency, fostering an environment of open dialogue, candid and inclusive discussions, and constructive feedback, staying adaptable in the ever-evolving environment in the crypto industry.

The Head of Tax Operations is responsible for directing and managing Kraken’s worldwide tax provision and tax reporting processes. Reporting into the Head of Tax, this role will also support tax examinations and audits, planning and special projects.

What You'll Do:

  • Lead the global tax operations function at Kraken responsible for tax provisioning and compliance, including worldwide tax compliance in foreign jurisdictions, and including both direct and indirect filing obligations

  • Lead preparation of audited financial statement presentation and disclosures, including uncertain tax positions and overall effective tax rate presentation and measurement

  • Continuing to build and execute a road map for growth of the future of the tax operations function

  • Lead, mentor and develop a team of tax professionals, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture

  • Work with the accounting and FP&A in developing effective processes and technologies to support continued growth and scalability of the tax operations function

  • Establish, document and maintain SOX controls for income tax processes

  • Prepare/review tax calculations

  • Manage external consultants 

  • Identify process enhancement opportunities and help manage their implementation, including developing tax forecasting in collaboration with FP&A and tax planning

  • Collaborate with broader Finance team and other departments to obtain data for tax reporting and to assess tax implications  of strategic business decisions and transactions

  • Monitor developments in tax accounting under ASC 740 and keep Tax and other interested parties abreast of significant changes that may impact Kraken

Skills You Should HODL

  • Deep technical knowledge of income tax accounting (ASC 740) and US income tax, gained through 15+ years experience preparing and reviewing income tax provisions and tax compliance

  • Financial Services, Fintech, or Tech company experience essential

  • Significant experience with US corporate international tax reporting post-TCJA (e.g., GILTI, FDII, FTCs, etc.)

  • Process-oriented, with the ability to create and enhance process improvements, and manage their implementation

  • Experience with evaluating and adopting technology to improve the tax operations process

  • Ability to be a people influencer across the finance and larger Kraken team to drive initiatives

  • Experience with Thomson Reuters OneSource tax provision preferred

  • Flexibility and understanding of the challenges of being in a developing industry, with large volume of information and many challenges (not being “set in one’s ways”)
