Principal Product Manager - Supplier Choice

Help us use technology to make a big green dent in the universe!

Kraken powers some of the most innovative global developments in energy.

We’re a technology company focused on creating a smart, sustainable energy system. From optimising renewable generation, creating a more intelligent grid and enabling utilities to provide excellent customer experiences, our operating system for energy is transforming the industry around the world in a way that benefits everyone.

It’s a really exciting time in energy. Help us make a real impact on shaping a better, more sustainable future.

Help us make a big green dent in the universe. We're on a mission to drive the global renewable energy revolution, and we need more people to help us make our vision a reality.

About Kraken

Kraken is the operating system for utilities of the future. Built in-house at Octopus Energy, we took them to become the biggest supplier in the UK, and now we power energy companies and utilities around the globe - in 10 countries and counting, licensing software to giants like Origin Energy in Australia and Tokyo Gas in Japan. We’re on a mission to accelerate the renewable transition, and bring affordable green energy to the world.

We’ve reinvented energy products with smart, data driven tariffs to balance customer demand with renewable generation, and Kraken’s platform controls more than half of the grid-scale batteries in the UK. We’re driving the uptake of low carbon technologies like solar panels and heat pumps via our software for engineers in the field. Our platform allows our energy specialists to be the most productive in the industry. We’re looking to expand our impact by supporting utilities with distribution grid responsibilities as well as energy retailers. We do it by hiring clever, curious, and self-driven people, enabling them with modern tools and infrastructure and giving them lots of autonomy.

The Role

As Staff/Principal Product Manager - Supplier Choice, you will be responsible for ensuring Kraken builds the features and functionality needed to support Supplier Choice specifically in Massachusetts, New York State, while also designing the capabilities for other contexts, both in North America and across the globe. You will have a dedicated team of engineers, as well as matrixed responsibilities across the entire product team to scope and assign prioritised new features and functionality needed from other key product verticals. This is a high-impact and high-profile role, with a clearly defined business need and priority, but space to dig deep and define the how.

What you'll do:
  • Play a leadership role in developing a key product capability to support Kraken’s entry into a new market,
  • Develop a deep understanding of our enterprise clients’ needs and prioritized outcomes across the globe to shape the products we build.
  • Conduct market research and competitive analysis of distribution grid utilities needs to support competitive suppliers, and supplier choice to inform product and commercial strategy.
  • Develop, prioritize, and execute your product roadmap, ensuring we deliver required outcomes, within the timelines agreed to, while also building a flexible experience within our core application.
  • Work closely with engineering to build, test, and refine products.
  • Drive a best-in-class user experience
  • Partner with client delivery and the Kraken experience teams to identify pain points, optimize workflows, and improve resolution rates for our clients.

What you'll need:
  • 7+ years of product management experience in enterprise software with at least three years of experience in the utility industry
  • A big plus: experience with utilities in North America.
  • Proven experience leading cross-functional teams, including engineering, UX and data science
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to define and track key success metrics.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management, balancing technical and business needs.
  • Comfort engaging with clients during sales, discovery, and delivery,
  • Passion for customer experience, with a strong focus on usability, efficiency, and empathy.

Why you'll love it here:
  • Great medical, dental, and vision insurance options including FSAs.
  • Paid time off — we know working hard means also being able to recharge as needed, we trust our employees to get the work done and take the time they need.
  • 401(k) plan with employer match.
  • Parental leave. Biological, adoptive and foster parents are all eligible.
  • Pre-tax commuter benefits.
  • Flexible working environment: you need to shift around your schedule? You do you, we genuinely believe in work/life balance.
  • Equity Options: every Octopus employee owns part of the business. We’re a team, working together towards huge goals. Every person is crucial to our success, you should be rewarded as such.
  • Modern office or co-working spaces depending on location.
  • We hire a wide range of experience levels into our delivery teams. The salary range for this role in NYC ranges on average from $160,000-$240,000 (with some flexibility) depending on relevant experience, role alignment, and technical/client management expertise demonstrated throughout the interview process. While the broad salary range is listed, not all candidates will be placed at the top of the range—this will be determined by the overall fit for the position. If you have questions about this, just ask! Our recruiters are happy to provide more context.

If this sounds like you then we'd love to hear from you.

Are you ready for a career with us? We want to ensure you have all the tools and environment you need to unleash your potential. Need any specific accommodations? Whether you require specific accommodations or have a unique preference, let us know, and we'll do what we can to customise your interview process for comfort and maximum magic!

Studies have shown that some groups of people, like women, are less likely to apply to a role unless they meet 100% of the job requirements. Whoever you are, if you like one of our jobs, we encourage you to apply as you might just be the candidate we hire. Across Octopus, we're looking for genuinely decent people who are honest and empathetic. Our people are our strongest asset and the unique skills and perspectives people bring to the team are the driving force of our success. As an equal opportunity employer, we do not discriminate on the basis of any protected attribute. Our commitment is to provide equal opportunities, an inclusive work environment, and fairness for everyone.
