The Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology’s (IMET) Aquaculture Research Center (ARC) located in Baltimore's Inner Harbor.



Position Overview:

The Aquaculture Research Center houses research animals for the IMET Faculty. This position supports animal health and welfare and ongoing research projects by ensuring that the animals are well fed; life support systems are properly functioning, water quality parameters are within established limits as determined by properly functioning monitors; records are kept and tanks are clean and the facility is organized.

Responsibilities:

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) has an opening for a Laboratory Animal Technician at The Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology’s (IMET) Aquaculture Research Center (ARC) located in Baltimore's Inner Harbor. The incumbent will provide animal care for the Zebrafish facility and the main aquaculture facility ensuring the animals are cared for in accordance with IACUC (Animal Care Committee Guidelines) protocols, husbandry care of aquaculture tanks, systems and surrounding areas.

  • Understand and perform feeding routines for fish and invertebrates.
  • Making batches of artificial saltwater
  • Determine water quality, observe data and make corrective actions.
  • Responsible for regular maintenance and cleaning of the Zebrafish room.
  • Maintain proper documentation on systems.
  • Review and update SOPs and training materials
  • Assist ARC Manager, ARC Assistant Manager , Veterinarian and Researchers with animal care.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Requires a High School Diploma or GED.
  • One year of experience in a laboratory facility supporting a research project similar or related to Aquaculture/Animal Husbandry

Note: Additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

  • Position requires the ability to lift 55lbs of salts or feed on a regular basis. Be able to climb a ladder and use a moveable staircase, adjust valves and service equipment. Transport aquaculture supplies, tools and equipment.
  • Long periods of standing on your feet and walking between systems.
  • Ability to communicate well with researchers, students, ARC staff, and ARC consulting Veterinarian.

Preferred Qualifications:

B.S. in Biology preferred. Experience in aquaculture, aquatic animal husbandry, aquarium maintenance in an aquatic animal research operation.

Experience with plumbing and mechanical maintenance a plus.
