The Landscape Assistant is a highly engaged position responsible for performing a variety of tasks, which may include any combination of the following:
- Perform landscape maintenance and repair in a designated area.
- Mow assigned areas using power mowers.
- Trim trees and shrubs using manual and powered equipment.
- Perform seeding, weeding, fertilizing and pest control duties on lawn, shrubs, and trees using manual and powered equipment.
- Assist with perennial garden planting and maintenance.
- Assist with Botanical Garden and Arboretum specimen plant maintenance and record keeping.
- Remove snow and ice from steps, sidewalks and drives using manual and powered equipment and materials.
- Maintain equipment, tools, and machinery in good repair.
- Other duties as assigned.
Frequent travel to various work areas and work in inclement weather required.
Evening and weekend work may be required on occasion.

No required experience. Ability to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions. Thinking and reasoning skills. Good communication skills. Thoroughness and attention to detail. Good time management and organizational skills. Familiar with and able to operate tools and machinery. Able to work from a ladder and/or aerial equipment. Must have a valid driver’s license and meet University driver eligibility requirement. Able to obtain a Nebraska Dept of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator license within six months of hire (on-the-job training and license fees are provided).
Relevant coursework such as horticulture or related field., or specialized training beyond high school. Two years’ work experience such as grounds keeping and/or horticultural experience preferred. CDL license preferred.
