Landscaper

Under direction of the Lead Landscaper in the Department of Facilities Services (DFS), performs all aspects of University grounds maintenance for the Landscape Services division to ensure an aesthetically pleasing, safe, and clean University environment. Collaborate with DFS and other University departments to complete assignments in a high quality and timely manner.

Duties

  • Plant and maintain ornamental trees, shrubs, flowers, lawns, and hardscapes.
  • Complete various tasks required to maintain University grounds, including but not limited, to mowing, trimming, cutting, blowing, watering, power washing, litter and trash removal, and trap and bait placement and retrieval.
  • Apply fertilizers, pesticides, and other treatments, according to instructions or documented best practices.
  • Perform such work as brush clearance, erosion control, and preparation of areas for special events.
  • Umbrella, tent placement in support of special events.
  • Perform exterior furniture, hand railing, and lighting cleaning.
  • Perform hardscape cleaning.
  • Perform low voltage lighting adjustments.
  • Immediately report any unsafe conditions observed or encountered while completing assigned work to your supervisor or other appropriate individual(s).
  • Coordinate with the Lead Landscaper and other supervisors to develop plans and schedules for landscaping maintenance and improvement.
  • Safely and effectively operate powered equipment including, but not limited to, power mowers, edgers, weed eaters, chainsaws, and roto-tillers. Inspect equipment prior to each use including checking oil and fluid levels, confirming proper placement of guards and shields, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Ensure that all activities are performed in a safe manner and comply with University and regulatory standards, procedures, codes, laws, and regulations. Uphold University mission through work performed.

Skills and Qualifications

Required: Graduation from high school or its equivalent. Must consistently project a professional demeanor and positive attitude, and be able to effectively and professionally communicate with and answer inquiries from visitors and the University community. Must be able to organize and properly handle equipment, materials, documents, and keep appropriate records. Willingness and ability to periodically work overtime hours, respond to emergency calls after hours/weekends, and work rotating weekend shifts. Must be flexible to accept assignments in various locations on campus, as well as changes in assignments. Uphold the Living Pepperdine standards in day to day work; participate in Daily Line-Ups, and be able to articulate how the standards tie to daily work. Must be able to lift up to 80 lbs and lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs a distance of 100 feet. Must hold a valid California Driver's license, maintain an acceptable DMV driving record, and remain insurable by University insurance carrier at all times while employed. Must be able to bring a current DMV driving record printout on the first day of employment. Ability to use a desktop computer.

Preferred: Minimum of two (2) years paid landscaping and/or maintenance-related experience. Working knowledge of landscaping installation and maintenance techniques and equipment. English written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

Offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of a criminal, education, and employment screening. Qualified individuals with criminal histories will be considered for employment in compliance with applicable laws.

This is a Regular, Nonexempt, 40 hour per week position.

Expected Pay Range: $17.55 - $19.50 per hour

The above pay range reflects what Pepperdine University reasonably expects to pay for this position at time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on relevant factors such as work experience, market conditions, education/training, and skill level.
