Accounting Manager

Position Overview: As the Controller for our nonprofit organization, you will play a critical role in managing and maintaining our financial health and stability. You will oversee all aspects of financial management, reporting, compliance, and budgeting to ensure the organization's fiscal responsibility and sustainability. This role requires strong leadership, financial acumen, and a passion for advancing our mission.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Management:

Develop and implement financial policies, procedures, and controls to safeguard the organization's assets and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

Manage day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger maintenance.

Monitor cash flow, investments, and financial performance to optimize liquidity and support strategic decision-making.

Financial Reporting and Analysis:

Prepare timely and accurate financial statements, reports, and analyses for internal stakeholders, board of directors, and external auditors.

Provide insightful financial analysis, variance explanations, and recommendations to management to support informed decision-making and resource allocation.

Ensure compliance with accounting principles, regulatory guidelines, and grant requirements.

Budgeting and Forecasting:

Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with program managers and department heads, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and priorities.

Monitor budget performance, analyze variances, and adjust forecasts as needed to achieve financial targets and objectives.

Provide budget guidance and support to program managers and department heads to optimize resource allocation and efficiency.

Grant Management and Compliance:

Oversee grant accounting, reporting, and compliance activities, ensuring accurate tracking of grant funds, expenditures, and deliverables.

Collaborate with program teams to develop grant budgets, monitor spending, and prepare grant reports for funders.

Serve as the primary point of contact for grant-related inquiries and audits.

Team Leadership and Development:

Supervise and mentor finance staff, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and professional growth.

Provide training, guidance, and support to finance team members to enhance their skills and capabilities.

Foster a positive and inclusive work environment that values diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or advanced degree preferred.

6+ years of progressive experience in financial management, accounting, or auditing, preferably in the nonprofit sector.

Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, regulations, and best practices (GAAP, FASB, IRS regulations, etc.).

Experience with nonprofit fund accounting, grant management, and compliance.

Proficiency in financial software and ERP systems; experience with nonprofit accounting software (e.g., Blackbaud, Abila) is a plus.

Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Demonstrated leadership abilities, with a commitment to fostering a collaborative and high-performing team culture.


$110,000 - $130,000 a year
