Overview:
You want to bring people together to solve problems and get lawmakers to make long-term, sustainable public policy changes that will improve the lives of all Michiganders by tearing down government-erected barriers to economic prosperity.
You appreciate how grassroots advocacy and principled elected officials can drive meaningful policy reform… and you understand the power and importance of leveraging grassroots citizens in the policymaking process.
You are an experienced communicator with strong writing skills who enjoys driving a narrative, leveraging your creativity to secure earned media opportunities, and identifying key inflection points around which to build out activities.
This role will provide ongoing policy, government affairs and communications support to AFP-Michigan staff, particularly on engagement with state policymakers, coalition partners, local government officials, volunteers and activists on policy and legislative activities in the Michigan legislature. This includes identifying policy opportunities and threats, strategy and planning for legislation, regulatory change and related activities in collaboration with the AFP national policy team to include research and analysis of current law and proposed state legislation.
A strong candidate will have existing knowledge of policy, process and personnel in the Michigan State House and State Senate. The candidate should have a commitment to the principles of the organization; specifically, a firm commitment to transforming lives through the advancement of principles and policies that ensure every individual's right to economic freedom and opportunity based on free-market principles.
Your Responsibilities Include
Serve as the primary liaison between AFP-MI and members of the State House and State Senate, coalition partners, activists on political, policy and legislative activities
- Monitor, research and analyze state legislative and regulatory trends in collaboration with AFP Policy team that impact our policy areas. Track pending legislation and mitigate as needed

Work closely with state director, deputy director, and AFP Policy team in the development and analysis of information for advocacy documents, issue summaries, presentations, testimony, etc.
- Build relationships with local government officials, business owners, and other strategic partners to further coalition strength in the statehouse

Compile answers to inquiries from field staff and assist and coordinate with their efforts in the field
Knowledge and Skills You Bring to the Organization
Minimum of three years professional experience working in a related field (i.e. policy analysis, statehouse position, etc.)-
Outstanding written and oral communication skills

Experience drafting op-eds, news releases, etc.
