The network also features an occupational health center, the largest skilled nursing facility in the Carolinas, an Alzheimer’s care center and more than 70 physician practices.Job SummaryA Spoken Language Interpreter is an employee of Lexington Medical Center who facilitates communication of spoken messages between LEP patients and visitors and LMC staff and providers. An interpreter combines the ability to facilitate understanding with both cultural and linguistic barriers while adhering to the role of the interpreter. An interpreter provides sight-translation of appropriate materials as admissible according to the conventions of medical interpreting to enhance patients’ and families’ comprehension of medical procedures, treatment, discharge instructions, patient and family education, and follow-up care.Minimum QualificationsMinimum Education: High School Diploma or EquivalentMinimum Years of Experience: 1 Year of experience as a medical interpreterSubstitutable Education & Experience (Optional): None.Required Certifications/Licensure: Nationally certified at the time of hire or must obtain certification within the first year of employment (Spoken Language Interpreters must be nationally certified through the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) or the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI))Required Training: Must complete or have completed Bridging the Gap Medical Interpreter specific proficiency testing and training upon hire.Essential Functions• Demonstrate outstanding listening, analytical and short-term memory skills.• Demonstrate excellent language skills in both English and another language.• Demonstrate an understanding of ethical and professional codes of conduct covering confidentiality, informed consent and privacy.• Provides interpretation services effectively, with accuracy of meaning through the use of medical, business, and general terminology. The communication triad may include, but is not limited to, interpretation for patients, family members, visitors, LEP employees of LMC, and any person providing care or treatment on behalf of LMC and its affiliates.• Follows the guidelines of the National Council on Interpreting in Healthcare (NCIHC).Duties & Responsibilities• Provides sight-translation when needed and appropriate of pertinent materials for patients and families.• Serves as a cultural mediator, as necessary and when appropriate, to enhance communication between staff and patients or family members.• Monitors language and interpreting skills, takes initiative to maintain and improve as necessary and stays abreast of linguistic meanings and regional variances of both languages.• Participates in Continuing Education opportunities to maintain certification.• Monitors, accepts and responds to requests through ServiceHub.• Culturally sensitive and able to adapt to adverse situations, handle high pressure or emotionally intense scenarios.• Able to travel to other LMC facilities.• Performs all other duties as assigned.We are committed to offering quality, cost-effective benefits choices for our employees and their families:• Day ONE medical, dental and life insurance benefits• Health care and dependent care flexible spending accounts (FSAs)• Employees are eligible for enrollment into the 403(b) match plan day one.
