About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

SMU Libraries seeks a detail-oriented individual to join the Collections and Technical Services team within the Fondren Library on the main SMU campus.

The primary purpose of this position is performing quality control on shelf-ready materials and managing End Processing, Fondren Library mail delivery, and Periodicals Check-in. This person monitors the end processing area that prepares physical items for use in the SMU Libraries, which includes overseeing the receipt of these materials and managing the student workers in this area. This person also works with employees within the SMU Libraries in the transfer of materials after processing is complete.

SMU is a nationally ranked private research university in Dallas, TX, with eight degree-granting schools. SMU Libraries includes six libraries on the main campus and one library at our satellite location in Taos, NM.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs quality control of vendor-supplied cataloging using MarcEdit. The person in this position will need to be able to learn new software, pay attention to details, and edit information accurately.
  • Receives books in our Library Services Platform (Ex Libris Alma) and prepares them for end processing. The person in this position will need to be able to learn a process and perform this accurately every time a book is prepared for the shelf.
  • Trains and supervises at least two student workers. The person in this position will need to be able to give clear directions, follow through to check students’ work, and give positive feedback to correct any errors.
  • Supervises and maintains receiving of periodicals including submitting claims, generating bindery alerts, and maintaining holdings records. The person in this position will need to be able to perform work that checks inventory, communicates if information is missing, and assures the accuracy of information.
  • Oversees end processing and Fondren mail delivery, including resolving problems and monitoring workflows. The person in this position will need to be able to identify problems and correct them as well as ensuring proper procedures are being followed.
Qualifications


Education and Experience:

Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Two years of experience performing similar or related tasks to one or more of the essential functions
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 3 years of related work experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience working in technical services in an academic library
  • One year of supervisory experience
  • Knowledge of integrated library systems and/or library service platforms
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to learn and apply new technologies
  • Ability to recognize unusual or problem situations, which should be brought to the attention of a supervisor
