Reports To: Program Director

FLSA Status: Temporary, Organized Camp Employee

Job Start Date: June 2nd, 2023 (flexibility exists)

Job End Date: Aug 12th, 2023 (flexibility exists)

Summary: The Lifeguard is directly involved in delivery of the summer aquatics program. Additionally, the position is ultimately responsible for safety and quality of the aquatic experience. The incumbent trains, supervises Cabin Counselor volunteers in the execution of a safe aquatics program.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • The execution of a safe and fun aquatic experience for the campers.
    • Meet Camp outcomes for each participant in the execution of the aquatic program.
    • Maintain or exceeds American Camp Association accreditation standards in the delivery of the program.
    • Serves as lifeguard for all pool and aquatic activities.
    • Meet or exceed previous summer aquatic program evaluation scores.
    • Provide the Program Director mid-season and end-of-the-season recommendations for program improvements.
  • Train and Supervise counselor volunteers.
    • Train and supervise volunteer staff in pool rescue and emergency participant identification procedures.
    • Provide volunteer orientation and training in safety look-out responsibilities and emergency procedures.
    • Communicate with the Directing team performance observations for volunteer counselor staff while on duty at aquatic activities.
  • Maintain Program Safety
    • Orients all pool participants, campers and staff, to pool rules and procedures prior to any aquatic activity.
    • Conducts eligibility swim test for all swimmer prior to any aquatic activity
    • Identify and report potential risks/ hazards related to the operation of the Camp aquatic experience.
    • Enforce established safety practices, regulations, emergency procedures and appropriate camper/staff supervision ratios.
    • Conduct routine checks of program areas and equipment for safety, cleanliness and good repair.
    • Demonstrates excellent situational judgment
    • Insure lifesaving equipment and first aid equipment is available and in good repair
  • Equipment and Supplies
    • Coordinate the acquisition and delivery program equipment and supplies.
    • Instruct and oversee the safe operation and use of equipment and supplies.
    • Responsible for cleanliness of program areas and equipment storage.
    • Pack and store equipment at the end of each season making written recommendations for equipment, supplies for the following season.
  • Member of the Program Leadership Team
    • Attend leadership meetings with other directors and activity staff
    • Assist in the set-up and implementation of other activities as assigned.

Education and Work Experience

  • At least 19 years of age
  • At least 2 years of aquatic management experience with supervisory duties
  • High School Diploma or GED

Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills

  • General knowledge and demonstrated experience with lifeguard skills in a camp for pool environment; knowledge of and experience in the delivery of recreational aquatic programs and youth development competencies and strategies;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with other management staff, employees, volunteers and the general public
  • Strong understanding of aquatic programs with special needs community.
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Strong organizational skills and excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure to deliver results in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekdays, weekends, holidays and nights.
  • MUST be available to work onsite at Camp from June 5th to early-August

  • Camp volunteers

Language Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret general business periodicals and professional journals. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, board members, families and the general public.

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with various concrete variables in situations with limited standardization. Ability to interpret various instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Holds or is able to hold First Aid / CRP /certificates for Lifeguards
  • Holds or is able to hold Lifeguard certification

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to scan and observe for prolonged periods, swim, tread water, stand; walk distances on uneven ground in a rustic exposed outdoor environment; use hands to finger, handle, pull or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel; talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

  • While performing the duties of this job, must be available to work irregular hours, shifts, weekends, holidays in a rustic outdoor environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Room and Board Provided during Summer Season.

Daily rate of $175.
