Assistant General Counsel

ABOUT THE LUCAS MUSEUM OF NARRATIVE ART

As the first museum to focus exclusively on storytelling through images, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art believes that visual storytelling can connect us and help shape a more just society. With a growing collection that encompasses artworks from across cultures, places, times, and mediums, including paintings, sculptures, murals, photography, comic art, book and magazine illustrations, and the arts of filmmaking, the Lucas Museum will explore narrative art’s potential to prompt questions, invite opinions, inspire community, and move people to think about the impact of images on our world.

 

Co-founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson and led by director and CEO Sandra Jackson-Dumont, the Lucas Museum was designed by renowned architect Ma Yansong of MAD Architects with Stantec as executive architect and is under construction in Los Angeles’s Exposition Park. An 11-acre campus with extensive new green space designed by Studio-MLA will embrace the museum’s 300,000-square-foot building, which will feature expansive galleries, two state-of-the-art theaters, and dedicated spaces for learning and engagement, dining, retail, and events. www.lucasmuseum.org.


POSITION SUMMARY

 

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is seeking an Assistant General Counsel who will report to the General Counsel/Chief Strategy Officer. Candidates should be able to work in a variety of subject areas, including transactions/contract, trademark, copyright, employment, non-profit governance, tax-exempt organization law, and real estate.


RESPONSIBILITIES
  • With independent judgment and initiative, the Assistant General Counsel will work collaboratively with the General Counsel and other members of the museum staff to:

  • Draft and negotiate a high volume of agreements in a variety of areas, including exhibitions, rights and reproduction, public programming, acquisitions, sponsorships, special events, licensing, publishing, real estate and leases, consulting, employment, construction, and facility maintenance
  • Further develop and support internal legal systems, including contract management system and templates, and conduct staff trainings on same
  • Partner with others to oversee the museum’s intellectual property portfolio, including rights databases and trademark registrations 
  • Conduct legal analysis and provide legal support to departments throughout the Museum, including by assisting in structuring initiatives and projects, reviewing and drafting documents, identifying and mitigating intellectual property, tax and other legal risks, evaluating fair use requests, ensuring compliance with applicable laws, internal policies and procedures, and providing advice and counsel to various staff and departments
  • Assist in preparing materials for the Board and Board Committees, including resolutions, by- law amendments, committee charters, and minutes
  • Undertake such other duties as may be assigned


QUALIFICATIONS
  • Law degree from an accredited institution
  • Admitted to practice law in California
  • Minimum four years’ experience practicing law
  • Demonstrated specialized knowledge in one or more of the legal fields described above, with preference for transactional and intellectual property experience
  • Outstanding organizational ability and attention to detail; ability to work independently and manage multiple deadlines simultaneously
  • Excellent analytical, drafting, negotiation, and oral and written communication skills
  • Diplomacy, confidentiality, and teamwork skills are crucial. Ability to work collaboratively, as part of a small legal team and with colleagues outside of the Legal Department
  • Advanced knowledge MS Office Suite (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and legal research platforms


$150,000 - $165,000 a year

Salary and titles will be assigned commensurate to the successful candidates’ education and experience. An attractive compensation package will be offered to the successful candidate(s).

 

Pursuant to the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art’s COVID-19 Mandatory Vaccination Policy, the museum requires all new hires to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment absent an approved medical and/or religious exemption. Upon hire, all new hires will receive detailed instructions on complying with this policy.  Federal, state, or local public health directives may impose additional requirements.
