The University Center invites applications for a Mail Clerk/Carrier III.


Working under the direction of the ShipEx Supervisor, the individual in this position will assist customers with their shipping needs by providing US Postal Services (USPS), FedEx, and United Parcel Services (UPS) shipping, custom packaging, and retail packaging supplies to the campus community. Additional services offered at ShipEx includes serving as the University Center lost and found, rental of lockers, private mailbox rentals, and management of posters/banners.


Required Skills


  • General knowledge in shipping options, special services such as overnight, priority, insured and certified.
  • Prior use of or demonstrated ability to learn quickly with transferrable knowledge and experience with the use of PC’s, FedEx, USPS, & UPS shipping systems, regulations, requirements and procedures.
  • Ability to become proficient with the use of PC’s, Postage Meter Machines, scales, Postal Mate software & University sorting schemes.
  • Commitment to learning all University, ICC, US Postal Service, and other vendor policies, procedures, rules, regulations, requirements, rates and forms and be able to convey this information to the campus community.
  • Ability to react quickly to changing circumstances.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Illustrate a general knowledge of all functional areas within the UC and UM.
  • Excellent customer service skills; relationship-building and ability to work effectively with diverse internal and external customers, departments, agencies, and individuals; interact with students and staff in a consistent and equitable manner; maintain effective communication with co-workers, administrators, students, clients, vendors, and the public; remain calm and exercise patience, tact, and courtesy in stressful situations.

Physical Requirements


  • Lifting: Ground to 36 inches, up to 70 pounds. Ground to overhead, up to 20 pounds.
  • Carrying: Front carry up to 70 pounds for 10 feet or less.
  • Carrying: Front carry up to 30 pounds, up and down 2 flights of stairs.
  • Pushing/Pulling: (during the use of carts and maneuvering very heavy freight) require pushing and pulling forces of 70 pounds peak and 50 pounds sustained.
  • Static trunk forward bending from a standing position.
  • Reaching with your arms in all directions.
  • Working at 70” height (sorting and casing mail) occasionally.
  • Balancing when climbing stairs.
  • Walking various distances throughout the day on even and uneven surfaces, distances up to 1000 feet.
  • Use of firm hand grip strength during sorting and handling of mail and packages, needing a maximum of 50 pounds of grip force in both hands.
  • Manual steadiness, dexterity, speed, and coordination:
    • Manual Dexterity — The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
    • Wrist-Finger Speed — The ability to make fast, simple, repeated movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists.

Physical Screen will be administered prior to a final offer of employment.


Preferred Qualifications


  • High School diploma or equivalency and one (1) year working in a post office, shipping center or retail experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Position Details


Position Title: Mail Clerk/Carrier III

Position Number: NEW

Department: University Center

Work Schedule: Full-time, 0.75 FTE

Monday through Friday 11:00 am to 6:00 pm, 12 months/year.

Salary: $17.625/hr

Union Affiliation: FOCUS-MFPE

Probationary Period: Six months minimum
