Maintenance Worker - job 2 of 2

Duties

As a Maintenance Worker your duties will include but are not limited to the following:
Buildings and Facilities Maintenance

  • Completes repairs to building and facility electrical systems.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance on heating systems and refrigeration and air conditioning units.
  • Examines and operationally tests electronic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems for proper operation.
  • Performs the maintenance, repair or construction of a variety of Service structures and surfaces of brick, block, stone, and other related materials.
  • Welds various metals, cast iron, and steel pipe in flat, curved, vertical and horizontal positions using oxygen-acetylene cutting torches, and metal inert gas (MIG), tungsten inert gas (TIG) and arc welders in the shop or field to repair, modify or fabricate parts or equipment.
  • Repairs, replaces, removes old roofing on structures.
  • Applies standard measurements, specifications, and instructions when constructing, installing, or repairing items.
  • Measure, cut, construct, install, repair, and modify wood, composite, and wood substitute items to rough finishes.
  • Performs plumbing tasks to various buildings and structures.
  • Ability to accurately interpret specific information on work to be done from work orders, oral instructions, and sketches.
  • Performs the painting and coating work to the buildings and facilities.
  • Prepares surfaces by methods such as sanding and wire brushing.
  • Uses and maintains tools and equipment, records inventory and maintenance, and reports/documents equipment damage or loss.
  • Documents actions as required in various databases.
Equipment and Vehicle Operation
  • Operates a variety of heavy equipment to push, pull, pile, or load materials such as sand, gravel and earth while excavating, backfilling, grading, or leveling earth to specifications on projects such as repairing and breaking new ground for trails, roads, canals, tunnels, or construction sites. Heavy equipment may include: bulldozers, excavators, road graders, skid steers, backhoes, wheeled and tracked loaders, backhoes, wheeled equipment/vehicles, and specialized equipment. Implements may include mowers, cutter bars, drum choppers, augers, plows, harrows, sprayers, discs, etc.
  • Adjusts the attachments for proper level, angle, or depth, according to the work to be done and the type of equipment used.
  • Establishes rough grade, which is +/- 6 inches of specified grade.
  • Follows oral instructions or written work orders concerning the location of the job and the work to be done.
  • Work is performed with limited direct supervision.
  • Plans and coordinates small to medium land management and earth moving projects within specifications and requirements. .
  • Operates equipment hauling trucks over commercial highways and through city streets from one refuge to another.
  • Operators must be able to maneuver vehicles within close tolerances when driving and backing over rough terrain, close quarters, uneven ground, and in narrow or congested areas.
  • Operators must ensure cargo is safely secured; select the safest, most direct, and legally allowed route; and complies with all federal, state and local laws and regulations.
  • Applies herbicides and insecticides using trailer, backpack and hand sprayers.
  • A Commercial Driver's License (CDL (Class A)) is required to operate these vehicles and to transport heavy equipment between refuges.
Projects, Safety, and Records Management
  • Serve as a mentor for other employees and volunteers.
  • As required, serves as a safety instructor for other employees and volunteers in the operator's areas of knowledge (e.g. heavy equipment operation, off road utility vehicle operation, etc.).
  • Trains and demonstrates work methods for volunteers performing maintenance tasks.
  • Ensures work crews follow safety procedures.
  • Work includes developing a course of action to manage and complete facility and land management operations and earth moving projects to prevent injury to others and damage to the equipment.
  • Keeps written maintenance records for all equipment operated. Keeps equipment log books up-to-date at all times.
  • Inputs equipment service and maintenance data in the Service's approved maintenance database.
  • Documents maintenance actions and logs as required in computer systems.
  • Uses and maintains tools and equipment, records inventory and maintenance, and reports or documents equipment damage or loss.
Other
  • Maintains and operates water control structures, installs and repairs barbed wire fences and gates, and also post and maintain boundary and entrance signs.
  • Operates and adjusts pumps, dams, water control structures and water flow rates.
  • Measures, monitors, and documents all water use and levels, control structures, wells, and pumps.
  • Performs habitat restoration and conservation tasks.
  • Manages refuge lands to product desired conditions for trust resources and other wildlife and priority public use objectives of the National Wildlife Refuge System

Although no specific amount of experience, education or training is required, applicants must meet a minimum level of ability in relation to the position and the Assessment Questionnaire in order to be rated qualified for consideration. To be qualified candidates must meet any screen out element(s) listed at an "acceptable" level, and must achieve an average rating of at least "acceptable" on all of the elements. Only education, training, or experience acquired before the closing date of this announcement will be considered.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements.

The screen out element for this position is: Ability to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision. This includes: 1) tuning up and maintaining vehicles and heavy equipment and troubleshooting problems in building systems; 2) operating heavy equipment to accomplish outdoor work duties in standard field conditions and in situations without complicating factors; and 3) performing general maintenance tasks on buildings or facilities that include work in the welding, electrical, plumbing, carpentry or other trades.

Monte Vista, CO - $23.77 to $27.73 per hour
