POSITION TITLE: Maintenance Grounds
DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Olathe District Activity Center
STATUS: Classified – Non-Exempt, Full Time
Pay: $15.45
HOURS OF WORK: Monday-Friday - 8 hours day

POSITION SUMMARY:
The job of Maintenance Groundskeeper was established for the purpose/s of providing grounds maintenance services at assigned site/s; ensuring attractive and safe grounds area/s and athletic fields; protecting against erosion; performing a variety of special grounds maintenance operations; and maintaining grounds for assemblies, events and/or recreational activities.
This job reports to Grounds Supervisor

PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists in the application of pesticides for the purpose of controlling insects and weeds in accordance with established procedures.
  • Attends unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. for the purpose of gathering information required to perform job functions.
  • Cleans landscaped areas and related items (e.g. storm drains, fields, litter, etc.) for the purpose of preventing flooding and removing hazards.
  • Constructs landscape items and features for the purpose of modifying - or adapting facilities to specific needs. Installs small sections and areas of concrete (e.g. pads, sidewalks, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining safe and attractive grounds.
  • Maintains job related grounds keeping equipment for the purpose of ensuring for the availability of equipment in a safe operating condition.
  • Maintains playground equipment for the purpose of ensuring the availability of equipment in safe operating condition in compliance with established guidelines.
  • Operates heavy equipment (e.g. tractor, trailers, back hoe, skid loader, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining grounds.
  • Performs a variety of landscaping activities (e.g. mowing, weeding, trimming, planting, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining district grounds.
  • Plants a variety of landscaping materials (e.g. lawns, shrubbery, flowers, etc.) for the purpose of keeping the grounds attractive and protecting against erosion.
  • Prepares grounds and athletic fields (e.g. fertilizes soil, courtyards, flower beds, chalk fields, paint stripping, etc.) for the purpose of providing adequate, attractive and safe areas for assemblies, recreational activities and/or athletic events.
  • Removes snow for the purpose of ensuring parking lots and sidewalks are safe for vehicles and people.
  • Repairs irrigation systems and components (e.g. valves, wiring, timers, switches, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring equipment and/or components are in proper working order.
  • Requests materials, supplies, equipment, and/or support personnel for the purpose of completing assignments in a timely manner.
  • Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, vandalism, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action or notifying appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Transports a variety of tools, equipment, supplies, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job site.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
  • Working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; providing information and/or advising others; and operating within a defined budget.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrate understanding of verbal and written communication and ability to speak and write at a level sufficient to perform the duties of the job.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously
  • High degree of motivation, responsibility and confidentiality
  • Demonstrated ability in compiling, organizing, and analyzing data
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a fast-paced work environment
  • Highly collaborative team player
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, etc.)
  • Ability to self-initiate areas of opportunity, make recommendations for improvement, and follow up as necessary to achieve desired results

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position requires the performance of heavy work which may include exerting up to 100 pounds of force, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The position involves all environmental working conditions which include but not limited to extreme cold/heat, close quarters, hazards, loud noises, and vibration. The position also requires frequent balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, grasping, hearing, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping, talking, and walking. The position also requires occasional fingering and repetitive motion.
