Work Comp Underwriting Manager | 100% remote opportunity (must live in the U.S)

General Summary:

The Work Comp Underwriting Manager will report to the Director of Underwriting Business Operations and help lead a team of Work Comp Underwriting Business Operations Analysts. This team works with field operations and corporate underwriting to address policy issues that need to be corrected and /or changed.

Working with our underwriting partners and Underwriting Services the manager will be responsible for oversight of the analysts to address post bind underwriting tasks: complex, exposure changing and premium bearing endorsement requests, bureau issues, audit and claim issues and other post bind policy issues.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Experience working in underwriting in the workers compensation industry.
  • Works closely with Corporate Compliance and Governance ensuring compliance with Federal and State regulations, Workers’ Compensation Bureau regulations and internal governance processes.
  • Oversees the team that addresses policy level issues, endorsement requests, bureau issues, audit and claims issues and other post bind policy issues. Understands complex policy level issues and works with the appropriate parties to develop solutions to resolve those issues.
  • Oversees that the team customer responsiveness goals are met while maintaining appropriate underwriting discipline.
  • Reviews and approves referrals within their authority.
  • Oversee management and updating SOPs for the team’s processes.
  • Works collaboratively with Sales, Claims, IT, Legal, Loss Control, Premium Audit and Field operations (Underwriting and Underwriting Services).
  • Monitor staffing levels and make recommendations as needed.
  • Develop, mentor, define performance expectations, address developmental issues, provide real time feedback, and establish goals in collaboration with the team.
  • Manage team member’s levels of authority and referral processes.
  • Successfully convey and execute company and departmental goals and philosophy
  • Other duties as assigned.


Job Requirements:

  • 6 years’ experience in underwriting in the workers compensation industry.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent industry specific experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, lead and train an underwriting team
  • Demonstrated experience in working directly with sales, agents, and brokers.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and develop business reports.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Goal oriented and independent self-starter able to work with minimal supervision and meet commitments/deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills including written, verbal, telephone, and virtual meeting
  • Must be able to travel, including overnight travel.

Work Environment | Remote:

  • This role is a REMOTE opportunity, open to candidates currently located in the United States and able to work without sponsorship
  • It requires a suitable space that provides a private and quiet workplace.
  • Expected Work Hours: Schedules are set to accommodate the requirements of the position and the needs of the organization and may be adjusted as needed.
  • Travel: May be required to travel to off-site location(s) to attend meetings, as necessary
