About the Role:
Managers at Treasure Data prioritize solving people and communication challenges before technical problems, but are still active technical contributors. They are eager to build effective and dynamic teams that iteratively and rapidly deliver resilient systems. It will require working across product and engineering teams on complex problems where solutions require in-depth analysis and evaluation of multiple competing factors, identifying the best trade-offs for successful delivery.

This role requires leadership by example and will have you making regular individual contributions. The team and you will be directly responsible for solutions for the platform in these critical areas: availability, latency, performance, efficiency, change management, monitoring, emergency response, and capacity planning. Additionally, as a leader within the engineering organization you’ll be a part of broader planning and ultimately aligning your team with the outcomes.

Success in this role requires a passion for helping others and improving their lives. You do this by working with people to make team collaboration more effective and by helping them simplify complex systems to make them understandable and operable. You are able to effectively communicate decisions, ideas, designs, and operation of systems and services clearly and concisely but more importantly, derive a lot of satisfaction from teaching and enabling others to do this as well.

Responsibilities & Duties:
Manage 4-5 team members, setting clear expectations, providing constructive feedback, and handling difficult management situations
Work with Engineering and Product teams to focus the team on high business value projects, lead delivery and identify major initiatives on clear timelines
Actively coach the people you work with to grow each member's communication, collaboration, and self-management capabilities.
Establish and encourage networks of communication. An Engineering Manager is an active participant and internal evangelist for our shared processes, and should always look for opportunities for engineers to directly communicate and self-organize, within and across teams.
Drive continuous improvement by measuring and reducing the amount of manual operational work by working with engineers directly to break down the roadmap and requirements for delivery.
Assisting with production operations as part of our full team on-call rotation.
Pairing with other engineers to help overcome challenges.
Assisting with system design activities, bringing an experienced perspective of socio-technical software systems to discussions to make the right tradeoffs that balance availability and delivery, and communicating those decisions clearly
Work with engineering teams as a subject matter expert on operating software and systems at scale, teaching them from your experience or know-how, and helping them reach their goals. Assist with system design activities, bringing an experienced perspective to discussions to make the right tradeoffs.

Required Qualifications:
Are a student of complex systems theory and how to build resilient and adaptive systems and teams.
Have experience working in highly distributed teams across large time zone differences.
Have a deep understanding of the common failure modes in distributed systems.
