Job Title: Manager - Commercial Lines Underwriting
Job Summary
This position provides guidance and leadership to Commercial Lines underwriting staff. The position is responsible for managing the assigned book of business by controlling the underwriting results and maximizing the quality of insurance written.
Job Functions, Duties, & Responsibilities
Facilitates a work environment that fosters and supports ethical decision-making and actions by motivating, promoting and modeling ethical behavior, as well as executing job responsibilities in accordance with Citizens core values, ethics and information protection policies.

  • Responsible for managing staff, including hiring, goal setting, planning and delegation of work, training and development, coaching/mentoring and completing performance evaluations.
  • Provide direct oversight for the day to day personal underwriting and monitor the quantity and quality of work performed by the business unit. Accountable for effective implementation of and adherence to the established business processes and underwriting rules.
  • Participate in and lead company related projects, committees or special assignment as requested by divisional leadership.
  • Assist in establishing policy and procedure, developing strategic goals and objectives, and providing direction, support, and leadership.
  • Establish and adjust staff and workflows to facilitate the most efficient use of resources and provide the best possible service to internal and external customers.
  • Resolve or recommend resolutions for significant underwriting and operational issues

Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of underwriting principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and other web-based applications.
  • Strong knowledge of property coverage and ISO forms and rules.
  • Strong knowledge to resolve or recommend resolutions for significant underwriting and operational issues.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (REQUIRED)

  • Demonstrated leadership skills and managerial skills Strong planning and organization skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with all levels of management and staff.
  • Ability to prioritize projects, make decisions and judgments on sensitive, confidential issues.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills, including the ability to develop appropriate recommendations.

Education and Prior Work Experience Qualifications (Preferred)

  • Master’s degree
  • 8 or more years of professional property / casualty underwriting experience, 6 of which are in personal underwriting.
  • 4 or more years of supervisory/managerial experience in Commercial/Personal Underwriting setting.
  • Thorough knowledge of Citizens Operations, systems, and procedures
  • Possession of AINS, CPCU, AU or CIC Designations

Required Education & Prior Experience

  • HS Diploma | GED
  • Bachelor’s Degree OR 4 years relevant experience, OR a combination of college education and relevant experience equivalent to 4 years
  • 6 or more years of professional property / casualty underwriting experience, 4 of which are in commercial/personal underwriting.
  • 2 or more years in a supervisory/managerial role in Operations in the property insurance industry
