Department purpose and structure
Our New York, Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C. based U.S. litigation practice provides clients with a full-service offering, with a deep bench across both offices. With over 30 attorneys, our litigation practice serves clients in complex disputes, financial institutions litigation, regulatory and white collar defense, antitrust, internal investigations and special investigations for boards, securities litigation, corruption investigations and litigation related to regulatory compliance, intellectual property and professional liability.

Role purpose
The Managing Clerk is responsible for daily activities of a full-service Docket and Court Services Department including the filing, serving and retrieval of court documents either physically or electronically and the processing of incoming court documents (both paper and electronic), docketing relevant dates, and running reports.

Job description
Context
This role involves acting as a reliable point of contact as it relates to the Litigation partners and associates. The managing clerk support function is crucial to the day-to-day success of the business and this individual will play an essential part in this model.

Role and responsibilities
  • Review and docket case conferences, filings, mail correspondence and discovery-related deadlines using calendaring case management system, CompuLaw, CourtAlert
  • Search, retrieve and download online court dockets and filed documents
  • Prepare various calendar and case reports from CompuLaw Vision, CourtAlert
  • Provide primary support for electronic filing in CM/ECF and other e-filing systems
  • Provide ancillary instruction to other staff regarding electronic filing rules and procedures
  • Consult with staff and attorneys to ensure compliance with court rules and procedures, including appellate and bankruptcy proceedings
  • Assist attorneys and staff in other offices of A&O with local court proceedings, coordinating service of process and court filings
  • Maintain e-filing credentials for attorneys in various courts
  • Assist attorneys for admittance into federal and state courts or to appear pro hoc vice.

Team
This position reports directly to the Litigation partners, but also works closely with other members of staff, including but not limited to the wider paralegal teams.

Key requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum 5 years in a Managing Clerk, Docket Clerk or a strong litigation support role
  • IP Litigation background a plus
  • Knowledge and competence in electronic filing for both state and federal courts and web-based research skills
  • Working knowledge of FRCP and state court rules
  • Experience using CompuLaw or other court docketing systems
  • Excellent organizational, communication, analytical, critical thinking skills and attention to detail
  • Exhibit a high level of customer service orientation
  • Willingness to work with a national team of experienced support staff to provide consistent quality services regardless of location
  • General familiarity with best practices regarding docketing, calendaring and record keeping, as they relate to loss prevention issues in the legal environment

The annualized base salary range for this position is $150,000 to $180,000. The actual base salary offered will depend on the overall qualifications of the individual applicant for the position and other job-related factors permitted by law.
