Education/Experience:
- Must currently be enrolled in a Bachelors, Master’s or PhD program who is fulfilling a graduation requirement for their degree.
- Bachelors or Masters majoring in one of the following: Materials Science, Mechanical, Industrial, Manufacturing, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or Chemistry.
- First Solar encourages all interns to register with their University.
- Demonstrate experience of working in teams.
Required Skills/Competencies:
- Knowledge of MS-Office suite and some programming skills is necessary. Classes or experience in Engineering Statistics and Design of Experiments. Exposure to statistical software like SAS or JMP, Minitab, SPSS is desirable.
- Prior experience of operating and maintaining various Laser test bench systems for thin-films (Lab/ Industry) is a plus.
- High prefer individuals with general electro mechanical and/or industrial chemical handling competency.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Train under First Solar Manufacturing Engineering team in Sustaining Thin Film Laser processes & Wet chemistry processes like cell definition, metrology and module isolation, doping, etching, coating application, etc. The intern shall complete a process-control/ data mining project in the area assigned and will be capable of supporting on-call engineer duties at the end of the internship.
- Learn & understand concept of Key Process Indices. Review KPO metrics within functional area Global Alignment Teams. Determine how metrics change as a function of process variables.
- Understand functions of optical metrology. Execute calibration and/or Gage R&R on at least one metrology equipment.
- Determine relationship between process KPOs and module performance metrics. Complete data mining exercises on large data sets and leverage JMP and SAS towards this.
- Review existing JMP scripts. Look for opportunities to enhance robustness and functionality of scripts.
- Learn and understand concept of FMEA. Review current FMEA and recommend updates based on identified risks.
- Review and understand control plans, SPC charts and other documentation. Perform at least one process audit of an oven process.
- Upon the completion of this internship, the intern is required to present their accomplishments and project summary to the leadership team.
Reporting Relationships:
- Will be reporting to Manufacturing Engineering Manager.

Travel:
- Travel between the First Solar Manufacturing Campus in Perrysburg Only.

- Will sit, stand or walk short distances for up to the entire duration of a shift.
- Will climb stairs on an occasional basis.
- Will lift up to 51 pounds on a seldom basis, according to work instruction.
- Will push or pull up to 27 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
- Required to use hands to grasp, lift, handle, carry or feel objects on a frequent basis.
- 20/40 vision in each eye, (with or without correction) and the ability to distinguish between red, yellow and green is required.
- Must be able to comply with all safety standards and procedures.
- May reach above shoulder heights and below the waist on a frequent basis.
- May stoop, kneel, or bend, on an occasional basis.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment is required (including but not limited to; steel toed shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective jacket or apron and arm guards).
- All associates working on the production floor may be required to wear a respirator at any given time and thus, the ability to wear a respirator is a condition of employment and continued employment (requires little or no facial hair).
