OVERVIEW:
  • Assist electricians during the installation of new electrical systems or repair and maintain electrical systems.
  • They must be in compliance with state and local wiring codes.
  • They may install communications and computer equipment.
  • Using a variety of hand and power tools, helper electricians productively and safely install wire and electrical cable which they measure, cut, bend and thread through metal tubing called conduits.
  • They may assist in splicing wires at juncture points and feed/pull wiring into control centers and distribution boxes, transformers and transducers, switch gear and electrical outlets; and other permanent equipment, which they may also have helped to install.
  • Duties include cleanup activity, gathering and transporting materials and tools to electricians on the construction project

  • May work either inside or outside in any weather (Cold, Snow, Rain, Heat)
  • Work is sometimes noisy, cramped, dirty and poorly ventilated
  • Hazards include risk of electrical shock and other work-site accidents
  • 40-hour workweek is normal, though overtime is to be expected; electricians may work nights, weekends, on-call, or on emergencies
  • Medium physical demands requiring lifting of 25 pounds or less, and occasionally lifting up to 80 pounds
  • Must have use of feet, legs, hands and arms to climb and/or balance on scaffolding or ladders
  • Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl, sometimes in cramped and awkward positions
  • Must have use of arms and fingers to reach, handle and feel cable, wires, tools and other equipment
  • Must be able to work off of ladders, man lifts, or reach booms
  • Must be able to see and hear, or have corrected vision and hearing
  • Must be able to distinguish color coded wires
