Materials Scientist

Overview:
Conduct and lead materials analysis method development and testing to support product/packaging development, process analytical technology, engineering, and regulatory affairs for a fortune 200 company with some of the most iconic brands! Have a bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Polymer Science, or Chemical Engineering? Have experience in the area of Materials Science? If so, we want to speak with you!

We are We are currently seeking a Materials Scientist to join our team in Richmond, VA. As a Materials Scientist, you will provide scientific expertise for materials testing supporting business-critical projects, with applications that will span the entire product development process, from feasibility, development, manufacturing, to regulatory reporting.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Conduct analyses of prototypes and products using a broad array of materials analysis technologies, including water activity, isotherms, DSC, TGA and rheology testing
  • Expand existing materials analytical methods to include new matrices for which little to no precedent exists
  • Engage directly with product developers, engineers, and regulatory affairs teams to guide measurement strategies, problem solving, and quickly translate data into insights
  • Identify gaps in current testing capabilities (including both laboratory and inline/online/at-line assessments), researching options to address those gaps, and making recommendations for new technologies
  • Draft test method procedures and work instructions for new methods
  • Provide regular reports and presentations on work outputs to customers and management
  • Cross-train other team members and lab personnel on test methodologies, as well as directing the work of others
  • Transfer methods to contract labs and manufacturing sites

What we want you to have:

  • Bachelor of Science in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, or related field
  • Minimum 3+ years of demonstrated experience and expertise (5 years preferred) in the field of Materials Science, with proven capability in a range of analysis categories such as thermal analysis, moisture content analysis, and physical testing
  • Working knowledge of one or more of the following techniques would be valuable: accelerated stability testing, powder characterization, pharmaceutical-related testing, quality by design (QbD), chemometrics, process analysis and control, release testing
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, multi-task, and be a strong team player
  • Proficiency in laboratory skills, and operating / maintaining materials analysis testing equipment
  • Experienced in method development; method validation experience is preferred
  • Experienced in crafting reports and delivering results in cross-functional group settings
  • Excellent attention to detail, verbal and written communication skills, team building, and a commitment to quality
