The Charlotte Observer and News & Observer in Raleigh are looking for an op-ed editor to be a member of our editorial board and Opinion team. We believe our opinion pages are a central, convening place for conversation in our communities. The op-ed editor plays a valuable role in finding and editing thought leaders to be a part of those conversations.This is a full-time position that could include writing and other growth opportunities.The op-ed editor will move at the speed of news, serving a digital audience by providing urgent content on topics our communities are buzzing about. You’ll cultivate relationships with regular opinion contributors and seek new voices who represent our readers’ diverse perspectives.We’re looking for an editor who is attentive to detail and can work with writers of varying experience and skills. We want our pages to be compelling and thoughtful, and the op-ed editor needs to be curious and a thinker who is interested in a range of topics.The position will be based in Charlotte or Raleigh, two thriving North Carolina cities, and serve readers in both cities and across the state.Key Qualifications• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and experience editing or writing news, preferably in a digital-first environment. Opinion writing or editing experience is a plus.• An ability and willingness to interact with writers and readers and contribute to journalism that helps them understand and navigate their community.• A commitment to diversity of all kinds, including publishing content that takes positions you may not entirely share.• A strong belief in the importance of local/state news and digging deep into local issues.• Digital-journalism reflexes, including a willingness to experiment with new forms and tools.• Audience focus, including a zeal for understanding and using readership data, mastering SEO and other optimization opportunities and a demonstrated ability to learn new skills in social and digital and pursue innovative approaches to reach underserved audiences.What We'll BringAs a journalist at McClatchy, you will join a supportive, flexible, collaborative team.
