SUMMARY OF POSITION
Under the guidance of the site administrator, performs work of moderate difficulty aimed at providing the leadership and instructional resources and services for implementation of a school media program that serves as an integral part of a student-centered educational process.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- The Media Technician is an integral part of the instructional team. She/he fosters a positive attitude toward the use and communication of information by students and teachers and creates an environment where literature and language is valued.
- Provides access to the information and resources of the school media center throughout the school day, scheduling class visits flexibly to encourage use at the point of need: organizes and manages the school media facility in a manner that encourages access.
- Makes resources available to students and teachers through a systematically developed collection within the school and through access to resources outside the school.Provides instruction in the use of technology to access information outside the school media center, including the use of commercial databases.
- Provides access to the school media center collection through the management of an accurate and efficient organization and retrieval system.Maintains inventory of school and classroom technology.
- Uses a wide variety of teaching methods, media, and ways of communicating which assists students in identifying, locating and interpreting information housed in the school media center to insure that students can access and use all types of information sources.
- Informs teachers, students, parents and administrators of new materials, equipment and services that meet their information needs.Communicates school media program needs to the administration.
- Manages selection and ordering of materials through a process which involves teachers, administrators, students and parents; administers budgets for school media resources.
- The Media Technician acts as a consultant to coordinate student learning experiences with school, district and outside resources.
- Participates in in-service programs, technical training, staff meetings, committee meetings, and parent nights as requested.
- Plans cooperatively with teachers to incorporate information skills into the classroom curriculum and to assist teachers in developing resource based units and activities.
- Recommends student-level literature to teachers and encourages them to read to their classes as well as reading personally for an awareness of the literature available.
- Jointly plans, teaches, and evaluates instruction which incorporates information access, use, and communication skills with the classroom curriculum.
- Takes a leadership role in promoting and demonstrating the use of new technologies and media with teachers and other adults.Facilitates the use of Chromebooks or other technology in the classroom.
- Encourages students to read for pleasure and motivates their reading through a variety of methods including celebrating National Reading Week, coordinating Book Fairs, creating book displays, and showcasing new materials.
- Provides technical assistance to students and school staffs in the use of computers, related applications, and technology competencies.
- Updates and maintains the school website.Assists with assessment programs, including set-up, class logins, trouble-shooting, security, and take-down.
- Works cooperatively with the District’s Information Technology Department in coordinating major computer equipment malfunctions and repairs.Sets up and maintains school’s computer hardware; troubleshoots and solves minor hardware problems; troubleshoots and solves minor software use problems; installs District selected software as requested.
- Carries out assigned non-instructional duties and adheres to established laws, policies, rules, and regulations
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Perform related duties as assigned such as:
- Coordinating and managing the Accelerated Reading or Reading Counts program at the school.
- Fund-raising and grant writing for library and technology materials.
WORK CONTACTS
May provide instruction, training, and direction to student aides, volunteers, or other assigned personnel.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of principles and procedures of library operation; current library practices; district library policies and accounting practices and reports; principles and practices of educational concepts including curricular development, knowledge of principles of computer operations and common application uses; of computer-assisted instruction principles and practices; of modems, printers, multi-media players, one-to-one devices, and related equipment.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Work is performed independently requiring some measure of initiative under the general direction of the Site Administrator. The Site Administrator shall, at least annually, evaluate the Media Technicians’ performance.

CONDITIONS OF WORK
Work is performed under the following conditions:
- Exposure to climate-controlled office settings to outside weather with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat.May involve exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to very loud and occasional to frequent time periods.May involve work in crowded environments.
- Hazards: Office/Classroom furniture, playground/office equipment, communicable diseases, chemicals (as related to specific assignment), and power/hand operated equipment and machinery (as related to specific assignment).
SAFETY SENSITIVE:
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Six (6) hours of specialized coursework in library science, or the ability to obtain such credit within one year of hire. Some experience providing instruction to individuals or groups. High school graduation supplemented by college level coursework in computer and/or library science; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the work.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Preferred coursework in library science includes the equivalent of: 1) Cataloging and classification of library materials; 2) Use and selection of library media; 3) Computers in the library; 4) Organization and administration of a school library; 5) Reference, bibliography and, information skills, and 6) Children’s or young adult book selections.
